Sectional garage

Gonna put a new roof on the garage (again..) and am gonna do it properly this time.

I'm basically gonna do as someone else on here did, I forget who, and build a kind of shed inside the garage if that makes sense? So the roof will rest on timber posts, not on the sectional walls. Currently the joists consist of five lengths of angle iron which span the walls and the tin roof is bolted down to these. I want to remove them, but am concerned that they may be holding the walls together, like a spreader bar type thing..? Does this seem likely or am I being thick?

They do brace the panels.

I just left the original structure and roof as-is with mine, and cladded it internally with chipboard. Ply for the ceiling.

Why not remove the roof sheets leaving the supports in place. Put in timber rafters (or you can make timber I beams from OSB and sawn timber, I see them on site all the time nowadays) Ply on top of the rafters, 2x2 on the ply, insulate with rockwool in between the 2x2's then ply again on top. Felt to finish.

I think I'm probably gonna go for an EPDM roof, with some kind of closed cell insulation. So timbers, OSB, Vapour barrier, Insulation, OSB and EPDM. I will put some pictures up asap, and also some shonky google sketchup models!

You also need some decent support for the roof incase we get a good amount of snow, this happened to.my neighbour and it buckled his steel roof sheets

I found a reasonably local supplier of insulated roofing panel seconds - got a full pack - top and bottom ones were wrinkled. The ones in the middle were fine. 6m long (shame the garage was 6.1m ;-) Mine was a pent roof, so slid them up on the braces, secured with the self-drilling screws they supplied. 100mm thick, strong, walk-on-able, insulated roof. White inside reflects the light really well, so lighting is good.

I wouldn't have picked 100mm thick - more like 50mm, but that's what they had, they were cheap (ish) and the time saved in simply sliding them up there, screwing them down compared to anything else covered the difference to other methods - job done in one evening on a 5m x 6m garage.

Ended up peeling the damaged panels apart - the steel upper bits have assisted in cladding a shed, a rabbit hutch, wood store . . . the insulation is stuck under my house floorboards.

i lifted mine to use some insulation board underneath them used 3x2 scant to higher the roof so 2" insulation boards could fit under roof



then im going to top it up with this stuff or just use composite roof instead

I bought a double sectional garage with a centre dividing wall. Made it into a 24 x 14ft workshop. Put a wall plate around the edge to hold it together, then made my own apex trusses from 4x2 timber. I then panelled the roof in 5/8 ply and covered it with one layer of the best mineral felt I could find. I also lined the walls with 9mm ply and put windows in a the apex ends. I do not get any condensation but it does get cold with no insulation.
I built it when I was 20, 28 years ago and its still good!

I built mine on the back of my garage, ithe original garage had up and over doors at both ends, I built insulated wood double doors on the back of the existing garage, built the sectional garage up leaving space for a upvc side door, if you do this you will need to build a reinforced wooden frame to stiffen the remaining wall section. Replaced the lightweight beams with 6x2 timber, Stirling board roof felted then galvanised tin on top. Filled the gaps with 6" glass Wool, studded out the walls filled with more glass wool, covered the whole thing in cheap eBay silver foil bubble wrap as a vapour barrier and additional insulation, clad the walls with Stirling board, covered over the main door (I screwed it shut) with cellotex and fitted a couple of screw on bits of Stirling board so I can open it if I need access to the back garden.
I'm pleased with the end product, it's dry and comfortable to work in, easy to heat and best of all my tools don't rust as there's no condensation.
