Second time welding

I bought a welder 5 years ago to weld a new floor in an old Ford Escort. The welds were pretty bad, But i got the job done with some help of the net.
Now its time to get it out the corner of the shed and start welding again. I have a 106 Gti Track car i bought as a project, unfortunately i came across this rust in passenger foot well. I would like to cut this out and replace it.
Now i have some questions for you guys,

Gas or gasless, Last time i got a big gas bottle of Argon from Boc but it is too big and expensive, Ended up returning the bottle with half the gas left. I did notice on Boc website the now do a 2-litre cylinder which is perfect for me £34, problem is will my regulator fit it? Are all Cylinders the same size outlet? If it doesn't fit how bad would it be welding gasless in this area?

How would you go about cutting and welding this area? I think i will buy a Dremel as it will be smaller and neater to cut with. On the left i have knocked a hole through, Around it is solid, To the right it has bubbled up with rust, but seems solid underneath, wheel arch seems thicker. Not sure whether to cut it out or just remove outer rust and fill it.

Where can i buy sheet metal in Lanarkshire/Glasgow?

Regarding the purchase of sheet steel, I just got some 1mm off ebay..handy sized bits and not a bad price when you consider most stockists only sell full sheets and add a delivery charge.

Cutting with a Dremel, Don't even go there!!! If you did have an argon/argon co2 regulator then the regulator should be 5/8" BSP female and the bottle male, The opposite to Co2

All the welds on it are like that, Not neat, Looks like welds i'd do.

More money for uncle Arnold then,they are part of the Arnold Clark group

They look very cold and really lacking penetration, use an angle grinder and 1mm cutting discs, if not a reciprocating saw and bimetal blades

Here it is. I would not present it to a scrutineer for rallying. Strangely, my eye was immediately attracted to that foot. I would suggest its not a homologated cage.

So not advisable to trust your life to it on the track!

as said that tube to foot plate is a disaster ready to catch you out you would be better with no cage than the chance of it coming adrift in a crash and causing injury upon turning up for any motor sport event you would be turned away . it may sound like a moan but its your life you put at risk.but if looking for plate goggle for your nearest steel stock holder a lot cheaper than body shop suppliers normally about half the price

should be ok if cut and tube prepped correctly and welded to a good standard would make new foot plates . only niggle is if that bit is like that then every joint in cadge would need close inspection .
but still not for sport use

I normaly get my sheet from auto scot in paisley, there is prob better places to use but there local and handy to use.

Also what's the front inner wings like on your gti?? I have just had to cut and repair one for a friend,

The passenger side is through to fuse box, Not really had a good look yet. Hopefully be able to weld an other sheet in. Just found out you can buy replacement inner wings for £50. I'm actually finding more rust on this as i go round it. Its crap.
