Sealing a loft to stop dust blowing in?

I've got a property with a cold roof. I absolutely hate going into the loft due to the dust. It gets blown in and covers everything, and not only do I end up covered in it and dying of asphyxiation, I end up bringing it down with me and dirtying everything.

I want to seal the loft space so it can't blow in. Am I right in thinking I can cover the rafters in some sort of film from top to bottom, and as long as i'm not filling the void between the rafters, it will be able to blow through and act as a cold roof? Or do I perhaps need to batten it out first to ensure there's an air gap?

If it is a 80 year or more old property the only way I've ever known some one to de- dust was when the owner hired in a massive twin motor Nilfisk vacuum cleaner with three extension pipes and purchased a battery powered full head filter set up , plus several pairs of disposable overalls & a box of dis[posable gloves . He took out years worth of the remains of dead birds , nests , addled eggs, rat & mouse droppings , cobwebs , spiders and years worth of soot & crumbled lime based mortar & brick dust .

I think you're missing the point entirely.

i think you are but to clarify the point its a cold roof to keep your timbers from getting damp sealing it will cause wet timbers that your cold roof keeps away

but if you do want to do something get proper pics of what yours is and then ask for advice

if you have any central heating pipes up there they can cause issues with your timber if the roof isnt a cold roof and thats why most pipework in a loft is insulated in the first place also because they can freeze in a loft as well

That's not what he's asking. He's wishing to seal the usable internal void area against further dust ingress.

When I did this, I also put a large fan in the gable end window.

Very few houses here have a window in a gable end Fred. Most don't even have any sort of window or skylight either.

I was told I couldn't do this, as then the attic space itself will get condensation, as there will be no ventilation to it.

Ok here's a simple pic that I drew. Air enters from the bottom of the roof and fills the loft. I want to attach sheeting across the rafters to block the air - essentially like boarding it out. The air is still free to flow between the rafters.

In this bungalow I've used a 150 mm core drill to put vent holes in each gable end about 1m from the floor , outside are screwed on louvered plates .
