sealey spot weld and stud weld nozzle

So confused with sealey spot weld and stud weld nozzles, was not sure what make torch i had so emailed sealey to get advice on the nozzles for my welder which is the sealey mighty mig 150 they emailed back and said i can use the spot weld nozzle tb15 but there is no stud weld nozzle. so i purchased the spot weld nozzle and does not work for spot welding even had it flat out. but would be ideal for a plug weld as it left a nice circular weld well after seeing the weld i cant see why you cant have a stud weld nozzle.I then tried it on a friends machine not sure what make but his was 190 after a few attempts he managed a spot weld but with a lot of effort even he had it flat out.
but when you look at sealey website the info on the spot weld nozzle is identical to the stud weld nozzle. so i emailed sealey back to make sure they got it around the right way and they still say you can't stud weld with mig. but why are they advertise in the mig section stud weld nozzle.
is there anything else i could try to get this spot weld to work also i see somewhere else that these spot weld nozzles are for the mighty mig 250 upwards

Welcome Shoon. Not sure what it is you are trying to achieve but usual practice to "spot weld" using mig is as you say puddle weld. "Linky" http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/plug-weld.htm
Sealeys web site does not seam to work to well for me as when i tried to revisit the welding section it won't come up a second time!
The "spot weld nozzle" should have two cut outs that allow you to rest (push) the nozzle on the work piece while the wire tip does not touch the work the extra length of the nozzle and the gaps allow the gas to flow and for you to see the weld pool form. Not sure the intention of the nozzle is such that you as it were burn through the first layer and then form a weld on the second layer of steel. If you were trying this I think you would need to be running atleast 0.8mm wire (or even 1.0mm) to get enough punch. One way to experiment would be to get a piece of steel double the thickness of what you want to spot and see what setting inc wire diameter it takes to blow through while not moving the torch. Then see what it takes to do same for a single (correct) thickness. Then set welder between theses settings and try spot nozzle. Or better still give up and just use the puddle method. !!
I have had one of those spot nozzles for some 20+ years (came in package) and never used it!

Guess you pop your stud into tube and weld it then withdraw the nozzle. hummmm....

I saw this video sometime back that shows a similar Eastwood setup. Looking at the sealey stud weld nozzle it has flat ends to sit at 90° to the workface so the pins would be attached at an angle. Surely the angle is not desirable for dent pulling?

as for spot welding nozzle i was using 0.6 wire i will try a bigger wire It's just that i'm doing a campervan up and did not want to spend a fortune on tools so was thinking of giving these a go. As for the stud weld nozzle i was welding rings to the panel.as for the panel thickness your looking at a good 1.5mm, I have borrowed a spot welder but the nozzle was a try for the hard to reach areas.

This is what i received from sealey email

The spot weld nozzle supplied is the correct one for your machine and you cannot stud weld with a Mig Welder .
Please send attached instructions which may help .

The book talks about a stud welding tip and and a metal shrinking attachment, both screw onto the torch in place of the contact tip, the gas is turned off and the wire feed pressure is released. The stud welder is a hollow tip that holds the studs and the shrinker is a small head that is held against the metal and heats a small area which is cooled with a wet rag to shrink the panel.

It welds the 2mm pins on with the mig wire rather than 'resistance fusing' that a tradition stud welder uses.

Also found information about the shrinker, it uses the old style carbon arc brazing rods held in the end of the mig torch.

The Sealy and Eastwood nozzles are different shapes, I also don't see how the Sealy one would work as its the wrong shape.

Has anyone used the Sealey one successfully?

I've got one of those spot weld nozzles, the Clarke version, but looks identical. The same as Mike I've had it about 20 years, it's a bit like the old joke "tried it once & didn't like it" I had a go with it, unsuccessfully, put it away & have never used it since. I reckon there's hundreds about, tried once & never used again. Drill a hole & plug weld, get the knack of it & it's far more successful.
