Saw this Cushman chuck, bought it as I thought it was unusual.
My old drummond has a Cushman 3 jaw and mt1 tail stock so this chuck will go nicely on the tailstock.
I've not seen a drill chuck like this before. Anyone seen anything similar?
I think it's always intended for tailstock. And probably drill bits. Although there is a little of the kljaws poking out the bore is small. It will hold maybe 1/2" diameter maximum.
I guess it could be for holding up to 1/2" bar in a lathe, but why wpuld you use something on a taper so you have no through bore?
Plenty of small spindle chucks or collect systems to choose from.
To clarify, the taper is seperate, like a normal drill chuck, but the taper mount is part of the chuck so it's not like someone could have mounted a small spindle chuck onto a home made taper back plate either.
Whatever is in the back of it will tell you a lot about its intended purpose. If it has a (female) Jacobs taper there, that implies use on a drilling machine.
