New guy here,
I need some advice on scratch starting a tig. I bought a very cheap dc 160 amp tig from harbour freight. Its actually a very powerful little machine. I've never tig welded before, so I really have no idea what I'm doing.
I'm having great difficulty trying to start an arc. If I turn the machine way up it starts ALOT easier, but its too much for the thin sheet metal I'm trying to weld.
I've been told to rest the cup against the work and gently rock it up and the arc will start. This doesn't seem to work for me. I'm guessing for every 30 to 40 trys I'll get one started, and if I get it going, I usually panic trying to get the filler rod in there, and I lose the arc.
This is really ******* me off!!
Any advice? Or tips or tricks?
Thanks in advance.
