Scrapheap type scrapyards

Probably a daft question, but here goes.

I am based in Surrey / Sussex, and would love to find a scrapyard that holds more than just old cars. Do they exist? Does anyone know where I might find such a place.

I love tinkering in the workshop, but trying to find suitable recycled materials to build the projects I want is a problem. Things like shafts and bearings, pneumatic rams, solenoid valves. All the sort of thing that 'should' be findable in machinery salvage. Just where do you find machinery salvage, particularly in the South East.

There's a place called Hirst's in St Marybourne near Andover. Might be a bit out of your way but there are two yards there, both stuffed full of interesting goodies, including the odd tank!

Sign up with Freecycle.org. I've had loads of washing machines, driers and dishwashers. Good for motors, solenoid valves (a washing machine valve is fine for compressed air at 10bar!) shafts, pumps, pipes and so on. There's always the odd lawnmower going.

What you don't use weigh in for scrap, it will more than pay for your petrol.

'scrapheap challenge' scrapheaps just don't exist, at least, they plant most of the kit you see on the shows!!

I take it you mean the brand new lengths of steel just carelessly dumped from a great height, or the perfectly good range rover that has 'been scrapped'?! Funny how most of the kit just needs a battery and some fuel and off you go! hummmm!

One of the places they used on Scrapheap challenge is in Wokingham, Berks. It's called Wokingham Scrap Metals/ A1 groups or the Bearwood scrappy, depending on who you ask.
They still have some of the bits and pieces from when they filmed there, and some they dont as they are attached to my Dakar
Loads of useful stuff in there.

There is one scrappy not far from me which me and another member were given the run of a few weeks back, not much of interest to us but I did come away with my truck loaded to the hilt with empty propane and butane cylinders . Free as well cos the guy said they're a pain in the @ss to get rid.
He did have lots of air cylinders, shafts, motors fans etc there and a load of lengths of galved UB which did look appealing, especially when he told us how much he wanted per length .

A bit of a run for you but benfleet scrap my way is pretty good Iv bought bits and pieces in the past, mostly things like tanks , Convoy Commercials is another who are plant and commercial breakers, Iv often bought used Rolling gear and other gems from them, Dolmans another firm mainly involved in scraping and decommissioning large industrial gear, ie the whole of Shell haven, I had some great finds there.......

I could go on but really tho, Its best to get to know some guys your way that are into scraping this kind of stuff, once they know you and often a bit of mutual back scratching can be done, there take far more trouble to let you know what there getting and do you a decent deal, Networking I think those who sit behind desks call it..

Thanks for the input guys. For those quick to point out that "Scrapheap Challenge" scrapheaps do not exist, thanks, but I am not that green.

I guess I will have to practice 'networking' to try and find someone local. Trouble is being a weekend tinkerer, I just do not move in those circles, I am one of those who is normally stuck behind a desk :-(


Hmmmm, the Freecycle idea sounds a good starter. Used to be you could get odd bits and pieces from the local tip, but that is now policed tighter than a bloody bullion store.

I guess there is not much manufacturing / industry in the surrey/sussex borders, and hence not much scrap industrial machinery.

Is there anyone else on here from Sussex, I am actually about 20mins from Crawley.

try skip companies rather than scrap yards ,most factory /industrial waste ends up in the skip at least locally ,they sort , then move to scrapyards ,where it doesn't hang around long............and hi!

I've bitched a couple of times on here about the lack of suppliers in this neck of the woods - just trying to find somewhere to buy stock metal from is a bind.

If you do manage to find a decent scrappy then be sure to let us know !

If anyone's ever up Crewe way, there used to be a cracker down there. Just wander in, pick up whatever you want, and weigh it in on your way out, or just give the fella on the weigh bridge a fiver if he can't be arsed. You had to duck if a wrecking ball came your way mind - how they ever got public liability insurance I will never know (my theory is that anyone killed just got buried in the yard or eaten by the rottweilers who looked after the place at night 'sic im boy!' ). Last time I wandered in though the owner told me quite forcefully to get lost (he was holding a golf club at the time - nice chap) as they had had their license to sell to the public taken away. Shame.

Brilliant business though, theres a fortune to be made in scrap - my old man used to know a fella who owned one and would get out of his CAT at the end of the day and straight into his S Class Merc without even taking his boots off.

There are Salvage yards these days. That Salvager bloke on tv used to frequent them before he ******** off to france to become Le Salvageur.
