Scrap types / terminology

I know there are a number of different classes of scrap, and im not sure what mine is.

When ive called up in the past, i have asked for "light iron" pricing, but I was driving by a yard last week and stopped for a price, and the chap asked me what it was, and, rather than a generic "light iron" i told him i was chopping up a car and that id be bringing it in in bits.

I got the impression that the price quoted was lower than it may have otherwise been. Id already said that i was only bringing in the metal, not the seats / trim / tyres etc so i wasnt sure what difference it made.


Ive got a pile of other random steel also.


Light iron is the same as "shred", right?

Sheering is heavier grade?

I think ive had a better rate for brake discs in the past, i assume, as they are thicker? Interweb seems to suggest this would be #1 iron?



Im not even looking for maximum price or anything - its just confusing to me.

What would you think the body of a disco should go as? Mix of alloy and rust, i guess... I really cant be bothered to try and sepperate off all the alloy bits, although i do have a defender roof to go also, but, really, i just want the disco gone from my yard now!

Car scrap is the lowest of all, whatever you load into it will go as that. Separating stuff out, anything under 6mm is light, over that is heavy, over sized like taking in excavators gets knocked back for being oversized.

Im planning on taking it in in bits, in a trailer, with a load of other stuff. Is it still a "car" then or is it just scrap? It wont look like a car unless someone "wants" it to look like a car, i guess!

My yards locally use the grading:
1. #1 scrap (highest price) 1/4" thick and above, nothing over 3' in any direction.
2. Sheetmetal (i try to cut it up to under 3' as well) but some don't seem to care, one yard calls it "shredder stock".
3. Aluminum cans get the highest price, assorted aluminum is less, "irony" alum
knocks the price way down,.
So bust out any bolts stuck into your castings from corrosion, it will pay, rather than have the whole load knocked down. Even if some aluminum goes with the bolts.
4. Cars & Trucks have to show up with a title, or cut them up. Used to be you could simply cut in half, but I hear they are cracking down. There is a price per ton for automobiles with the engine & tranny, rims, remove the rubber tires though, they ding heavily. I'm pretty sure the whole thing goes in the shredder.

This is somthing ive wondered about also -

I have a defender roof to take in. Its aluminium. But i think there are some small steel brackets on it somewhere.

Im guessing everything magnetic needs to be removed then?

If the roof is tidy they can be worth money, certainly more than scrap.

It's not anywhere even close to tidy!

I have never "weighed" in any scrap in my life.

Not a single KG of anything.

Scrap cars get collected and we get payed for them - the batterys we store in Dolav boxes and we get paid when collected.

Other stuff I just throw in skip and it gets collected and we get paid for it.

I even used to get paid for waste oil at one time (heard it is starting to be free collection now from another garage owner - instead of us paying per 1000ltrs)

I have tried not to focus too much on the end product of car repairs - concentrate of getting things fixed and moving

I decided the time and energy involved in cutting a car up wasn't worth it - removed easy big chunks of anything that might make more - aluminium bits mainly - and took it in as it was.
