Sorry for the endless newbie questions still! Just ignore me if I get to be irritating! Found some good ideas from searching but I still have questions.
I have a couple of side projects planned for practice/exploration. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any common makes of vehicle to look out for in the scrappie whose diffs I might be able to drop out relatively easily without taking too much time in the mud dismantling?
My idea was to try to find a couple of units for as cheap as possible to weld up the planet gears together using different processes just for practice. Probly gonna end up weighing them in afterwards or seeing if any of my drifting buddies wants a massive paperweight if neat enough.
I have been looking to get my hands on a basic arc machine to practice on. Obviously I will do one diff with that once I get one as I am guessing that is probably the preferred method. Which rods would be best to use for cast?
Noticed- this thread here where a few folks suggested that diffs can also be Mig welded successfully...I am guessing at least 0.8 wire but what sort of ampage is going to be necessary to get good penetration? I have a 150A machine. Am I best to preheat?
Before I get my next cat C/D drifter project I want to make sure I can pull this off neatly enough on some scrap diffs that aren't actually needed and perhaps make a rig to try to test the strength/function of pinion just to be sure!
