Scottish music

[Wozzaaah]

Plenty of members north of the border to help me out on this one.
I'm after some Scottish folk music, traditional instruments but a lively style.
Already got 4 Shooglenifty cds and 2 Peatbog Faeries ones and I'm looking for something along the same vein.

Any other recommendations?

Oh and anyone who doesn't like the sound of bagpipes might change their mind after hearing them played 'Peatbogs style'

Actually Woz, you could do worse than try out the late, great, Martyn Bennet.

Also a well known band up here, but less in the vernacular, Swamptrash. (long gone now)

Just listening to 'year of the flood' now. Maybe a bit more 'guitary' than I like but very good .

Just had a listen to the Peatbog Faeries, a chap I work with would class it as "diddly diddly" music!, sounds like Irish folk music to me, maybe because they're both Celtic?
Closest I've got is Clannad

I meant runrig as a joke, but hey... They are very popular round about these parts.

Martyn Bennet was a local musical hero. I saw him play in a techno club in Embra about 10 years ago - techno bagpipes! it was brilliant - really, really good.

And while we're laughing, there's always Big Country.....

Btw, smallboy's uncle is the bassplayer in the Shoogles, and my mate Chris used to plant trees with the Peatbogs bassplayer. Small world.

I did spot the ' aHahahahahahahahahaha' but I just thought you'd been spending too much time in the 'bar' with Rusty .
I've never really given Runrig much of a chance, they've been around a bloody long time though so they must be pretty popular!
Can't find any Martyn Bennet at the moment .
And yes, you're right, it is a small world!

There's quite a similarity between Irish and Scottish folk, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

I've not really listened to Scottish folk since the '90s. There was Capercaillie who I felt were a bit up to date (and hence dated by the time I got my copy).

My favourite was Rannoch (very small band doing the Edinburgh festival part time. The bloke was once a member of Runrig but left before they made it).

The peatbog faeries are playing the Cambridge folk festival this year, and if your looking for inspiration you could do much worse than join me for a schooner of beer there........

Personally prefer Irish folk, I find it far more grity.....

Its a slippery slope BTW woz, you start off with a bit of folk/rock crossover, which leads to Scottish/Irish folk/ onto sniffle/ bluegrass/ country/ rocknroll/ Roots/ blues.....trust me my anorak now has toggles..........

Now there's a thing Snowy, it seems the peatbogs are doing the rounds of festivals this year, including The Trowbridge Village Pump festival in errr. Trowbridge which is where I live!

Unfortunately I'm not going cos I went year after year and got bored of it as it got too big in my opinion, it's totally lost it's appeal to me .

Regarding why I'm interested, it's twofold, one I really like folk music anyway, moreso the stuff with plenty of get-up-and-go and the other reason is I'm hosting a Scottish meal at my place for some mates soon and want to set the scene with some sounds.
My mates aren't particularly into folk hence the desire for something lively.

Gonna do haggis as a starter, reckon I'm gonna do finnan haddie for main but got a few other things in mind so not too sure yet
A butcher in town gets haggis in every now and again and an old Scottish guy down the road from me highly recommends them.

I'd do it the other way round meself. Fish for the starter and haggis for main. Mostly cos haggis is fairly filling. A nice tasty bit of finnan haddie would get the tastebuds going.

Isle of Mull has a music festival every April, bit of a journey tho, a few folks attending I have to spoke to in the past travel all points of the UK. Accommodation very hard to find at festival time, although Distillery Brae running down to Tobermory main street, ends up like a refugee camp with tents everywhere. Triffic atmosphere!!!

Dougie Maclean among others like Eric Bogle and of course Fifes own Dick Gaughan. Oldies like Silly Wizard ......JSD Band......and of course the best radio /folk blues country programme on Radio Scotland..........Ian Anderson ( Not Jethro Tull) That is such a thoughtful and poignant music show.

might not be what you're looking for but Salsa Celtica are like a Scottish / Cuban funky cocktail. mixture of bagpipes and maracas.
