School me on Schedule 40/60/80 steel pipe etc?

I asked on another thread about getting a steering head machined up for my prospective trike build, but while investigating I remembered this heavy duty thick wall steel pipe we used to use years ago, to save boring big holes in solid stock.

How does it work? ‘Sched 40’ or whatever? Ratio of diameter to bore? It’s something I’ve never grasped. Google provides great complicated tables that baffle my brain.

If I wanted something 3” OD, with, say, 1/2” or thicker wall thickness, what would I be asking for?

2 1/2” shed 160 would work.

2 7/8” OD, 3/8” wall, as my bearings are 60mm OD, 2.440”

I assume it is a reasonable quality steel, for high pressure etc.

I may even be able to do the job on my little lathe.

Having decided that, I cannot find a single place that sells it. Not in the U.K. anyway. I went all the way through ordering with metal supermarket.....

Even if you found a supplier I don't think they would cut a bit off a full length, I may have a slug of 3" I could put a 2" drill through . How long does it need to be?

These Metal Supermarkets reckon they sell ‘any size, cut to any length’, but the U.K. versions don’t stock near half what the US versions do.

Thanks for the offer, I have a couple of irons on the fire, but I may take you up on the offer if they fall through. I‘ll need a piece 8” long.

Try European tubes

Make it out of 3 pieces. One for each bearing, then a tube in the middle. Machine to fit together then weld.
I sometimes use metal supermarket in gateshead. They are dear but helpful, I always use the phone though rather than the interweb.

EN8 should be ok for the ends, pipe for the middle, then use EN16 T for the steering stem.
