Eutectic used to make a system that fitted on an oxy acetylene torch that used to build up a layer of metal on case hardened shafts.I have one of these kits laying somewhere that was rescued from the skip when a workshop closed.The process was I think called metal spraying.Have never done it due to not finding anyone that knew much about the process.

Avenly, theres a guy on pratical machinist who has recently gone through the pain of setup, and runs one of those spraying rigs as part of his daily job. Might be worth going and searching some of his recent threads on the matter

I've seen it used to build up press tool dies before grinding/stoning back to shape required, also used to build up worn shafts usually by turning them slowly in a lathe while spraying - scraps lathes very quickly!

Southampton Tech College had a metal spraying rig. We used to refinish motorcycle fork legs which had been badly corroded by metal spraying then regrinding.
It should work on those S cams.

I can go back to over 20 years ago and the S cams you mentioned were similar to fruhalf trailors !! these cames were taken out buy the companys fitters who then asked me to weld em up !! as a young welder boffin i made a jig to turn them and welded them on the mig , the gaffas dad machined them on a lathe they lasted quite well ... used to be a good sit down job for me ;-)

Hard Chrome

Don't know if it would be any use here, when we refurbish hydraulic presses if we have any heavily pitted or scored piston rods we get them hard chromed and ground back to size.
Hard chroming is seriously hard so the phos bushes will probably wear out first, guess they ain't £400 a pop though.

OK peeps, finaly got around to doing a trail run tday.... Luckily managed to get hold of someone extamly clued up on this sort of repair... who pointed me inthe correct dirrection...

The route I went was to use a duplex consumable giving me a ferritic/austentiic deposit, or a dissimilar S/S electrode..... using a austentiic deposit meant that It wouldn't Work harden from the parent material..... and the upshot was a hard wearing machinable deposit that had the added bonus of being corrosion resistant.... I aways use bohler thermanit 30/10 W for dissimilar repairs...

The shaft was simply built up, I made a simple little mandrel so I could hold it the collet chuck for machining and tacked it on (too much of a pain to clock on the 4 jaw).....machined it back and shes as good as new, only a couple of hours work......

Hmmmmm gives me great satisfaction to repair something that, I was told couldn't be done I now have a heap of ten more to do well worth the research I think

Drooped em back today, Foreman commented how smart they looked for something that didn't look possible, then asked who did em (cheeky git, he'd give simondrains a run for his money)......

Anyways presented me with a diesel tank, with the side ripped out "when you've got a minute" I do wonder if you get a license to drive 8 wheelers from tokens on Kellogg's pkts...

Hmmmm be interesting to put them side by side Hitch, my theory's that the S/S will outlast the originals ten fold....
