Scam alert, for machine shops.

Just had two emails in my inbox from Balaji Savant asking for a machining quote. Have to assume this is a scam as I am not a machine shop and only machine my own products. Would be all too easy to open the "attached drawing" if I was though.

I'm getting the "You've missed a call from your internet service provider" on the land line - had three yesterday and five the day before. I wish they'd call the mobile, and I'd press "1" to speak to a "technician" to try to string them along a bit. I daren't do it on the landline in case pressing 1 somehow leads me to a massive phone bill - the mobile is PAYG and only has a few quid on it.

Only 2 junk emails? I must get about 20 every day and it doesnt seem to matter how I set my filters up or block the senders they still come through, Im good at spotting them now though!

Dont get many on the landline but "amazon" called to say my account was compromised which is damned clever as I dont have an amazon account!

Not the case. It is impossible for you to be liable for a call cost unless you initiate the call. Pressing 1 or whatever is a divert from the originator, not a new call.

I get at least 5 a day, often more, just from people wanting to alter/remake the website. The reason I posted about the scam is, apart from the weird name, it looks just like an enquiry for someone wanting a part machined.

That's good to know, thanks. I wasn't sure, I recall hearing some tale of someone pressing the wrong button and getting charged a few hundred quid, but was never sure how much of an old wives tale it was. Had no calls at all today, their auto-dialler must have moved out of my number range for now - if they call again I may try it. I only want to shout abuse at someone, really. What can I say, it's a hobby.

The reason that they use autodiallers is to avoid the abuse that they deserve. I make up for it on every opportunity, tailoring my torrent to be as offensive as can be mustered off the cuff. Many of these criminals are actually proud of their activities and they make me sick.

I had the automated scam call today about my NI number being compromised.

I was bored waiting for a site meeting so pressed 1 to see where it went and see how long I could string them along for and the line went dead, gutted

do you think that bothers them hardly . some just tell you where to go ending in the word off its an international word everyone understands

Hi, If you say anything they know it's a live number and will just ring again another time. If you don't make a sound they just hang up because they think it's a dead or 'data' number and won't call again. Since I've been doing that the calls seem to get less.

They don't know nor care what your number is. The calls are made by an auto dialler, then anything that gets answered is patched through to be picked up by any available scammer. This is why the line sometimes goes dead, the scammers are tied up listening to streams of abuse from other victims.

It isn't always the case of course, once in a while I will get one attempting to call me back but Caller ID means that I can pick up and give them another barrel before they have time to speak, if I am bored enough. Otherwise I just ignore it.
