SBS trailer wheel nuts ?

Hi all, i have tried all over but can not yet get a definite answer. I have searched the web ( and for Alco axles ) and even asked SBS but no luck, so as always i should of come here in the first place as usual

Got a SBS 3500kg twin axle trailer with i think Alco axles, i cant make out the plates so cant say what the spec is (web says biggest is M14 studs) and i need to know what torque to set the wheel nuts to.

Hi, I had a quick google and found you will need the pitch as well but around 90Nm which is the same as my Brian James four wheel trailer.

90nm is more like M12 from what i have seen. On the table snoozer put up, that i have seen its 197nm for a M16 wheel nut on a Peak trailer.

I have checked that few days ago but Alco only go to M14, got me thinking if it is Alco axles but SBS use Alco axles, well do now, wonder if they used to use different axles now.

Just do them up tight, when I started as a commercial vehicle mechanic, the only torqued up nuts and bolts were:
Big Ends, Cylinder Head, Main Bearings and a few Gearbox Torques.

Everything else was Nipped Up, Tight, Very Tight or ******* Tight.

Wheel Nuts were 3/4" drive socket T bar and a 3FT Scaffold Tube.....and maybe a 6ft one to undo them....

looks like thats what i will have to do, no luck yet and as there steel wheels not ally ill just give the lot.

Some trailer studs/nuts are torqued tighter than others, it depends on whether the wheel locates on the hub and the nuts/bolts only hold the wheel in place or if like the iw trailers where they rely on the bolts to do both.

Exactly, maybe thats why its finding hard to find the correct setting. No thanks to SBS for the help, maybe as its an old trailer and not new customer.

if you can supply them with a serial number their trailer build records should be able to tell them, which axle type was used...

Sounds like can't be arsed or poor record keeping.

Send some piccies of the trailer and the axle to CLH Trailers - chances are that Chris (the owner) will be able to identify the axle / trailer and tell you exactly what you need to know.

Spoke at last to SBS trailers, the chap says they now use ALCO axles but the ones i have are what they used to that had M16 nuts max now on Alco is M14. But he did find out that they are 205nm for the M16, so bigger torque wrench needed ha ha

Same here I've never torqued wheel nuts. Always do them by feel and I've never lost a wheel or snapped a stud. Having to buy an 1" drive torque wrench that I never needed or used still seems a waste of money.
