Satin paint

I have previous experience in getting a nice shiney finish on car/motorbbike paintwork however my new to me vespa scooter has a factory satin finish to it. I need to do a few repairs to it but how is it done? I'm guessing it will have a satin clearcoat over basecoat but should I do any different on my usual prep work? Normally I'd spray the clear until it just about flows which I can get a pretty good gun finish but do you do the same with satin clear? Is it possible to blend? Any other tips or words of wisdom.

You have a fun learning curve coming up! Satin lacquer is how it's done and you have to add it to conventional gloss lacquer in various ratios according to the result you want. Then you realise that the 'semi matt' of the instructions is more of a milky gloss so you have another go.

You also can't do any buffing or polishing (obviously) so it has to be right from the gun. No special techniques required until the clearcoat stage.

I'll have to assume its a solid colour as it's satin. Therefore I would spray with a satin solid colour. I have personally never had any success with satin clear. As said, it tends to end up as a milky mottled finish and I've been spraying more than 40yrs.

The problem is I get carried away and would end up painting it all, unfortunately I've done my garage up so nice and converted it into a upholstery workshop I can't really paint in there any more(might get paint on the carpet!).Its ok apart from getting rustyish on the lower legsheilds so I might just clean the rust up, epoxy prime up to a body line and stone chip it for a while.
