Satin black border.

Well I've gone and promised that I can do it but now thinking about it now, I'm not sure how to do it.
A while ago, I painted a panel for a friend where he wanted a multi colour panel but on one plane. I therefore divided the base coats with fine line and sunk it in the clear and colour sanded it. He now wants a single plane design that has gloss colour with satin black border. Ideas on a postcard please.

is this going to be COB ? all i can think of is clear the panel, fine line it and carefully flat it and mist a very light coat of clear with matting agent over it, i think it will be near on impossible not to create a line of clear next to the fine line though, good luck with it as you cant polish it either once the satin is on

Yes its going to have to be sunk so COB. Now I'm assuming that the clear with matting compound once polished with the rest of the panel will remain satin as it's right through the clear so should be able to flat it back but as you say, it's losing that hard line between the gloss and satin clear that I can't get my head round.

same here as you cant simply bury it with either clear

So what you are looking for is a picture frame of satin round a clear gloss finish over color\s with no edge.

Pretty much. A panel with 3 sunk colours, one of which is satin.

cant see how youd do it with no edge...id clear it all with gloss and wet sand it so its all smooth then fine line tape and a light coat of satin and demask when wet

second thoughts ...you could try glossing it all and polish it smooth , then mask off the satin area and use one of the flatting pastes on a cloth to dull that area

I thought of similar but then thought about consistency of finish and would it be achievable

yeah kinda depends what it is ..something small you might be happy , side of a van probably not lol

I wonder if there is any sort of product that could be sprayed onto normal 2k cured clear to matt the surface and so would leave no raised edge

I see where you're coming from but not sure the matting paste would give a consistent finish. Try this theory but it has a snag. How about I mask off where I want the satin, Bury my colours then De mask, thus creating a void and then apply multi coats of satin black (which is what the satin colour will be) thus over filling the void, then block back through the grades to 2000 and mop out. Theory works but by the time ive got the colours buried in the usual 2 stages of clear/flat/clear, I would worry that the masking will lift the first lot of clear?

here is what i would try, apply all the base coat give the full panel 1 coat of clear so the base coat window is taken out of the equation allow to fully cure then you can apply fine line tape and mask off either clear or satin side, build the lacquer on one side leave to cure mask up again and build the other side and machine

I hear you. Test panel on the horizon I feel. Biggest issue is precise masking for the second clear. Suspect the line will appear somewhere.
