Sash Clamp Restoration

I bought this record 135 sash clamp which had a good coat of surface rust.

It was put in my electrolysis tank for a few hours which removed the rust.
It was then polished up with a scotch pad & WD40.
I repainted the blue bits as the electrolysis had loosened the paint in places.
Finally it got a coat of liberon lubricating wax to protect the bare metal.

Looks nice, seems a shame to use it!

The stuff I have done always comes out either matt grey, or blackened. Obviously the degree of pitting etc will depend on the amount of rust, but, looking at the shine on the screw on your clamp, I'm wondering how much effort you had to put into bringing it up to that level of reflectiveness?

I've only actually ever done one item that wasn't to be painted, so it's not something I guess I've paid attention to before, so I'm interested to know.

The electrolysis leaves a black coating which will prevent corrosion but looks awful & rubs off on everything. A green scotch pad & wd40 removes it & gets you back to a dull grey, perfect for painting, more rubbing gets it shiny. A wire cup brush on a grinder or drill gets a shiny finish but tends to remove metal and paint doesn't stick too well to the polished metal.

I've tried different ways to clean up screw threads and the best way is a wire brush on a bench grinder.

I've just started to use the liberon lubricating wax & I like it a lot. If you use oil on a g-clamp it is messy & turns into grinding paste when metal fragments stick to it & eventually it gets hard to turn. The wax protects the threads from corrosion but lubricates it as well. It is also a lot safer if you do woodwork, you don't want oil getting on your new timber!

Just renovated this rather meaty 10" Eclipse g clamp.

Paint wasn't too bad so I cleaned up the bar with the wire brush on the bench grinder. My arms were aching after that, this clamp is very heavy! Then I gave the rest a coat of blue paint & once dry I waxed the bar.

Came up ok, could do with another coat of paint to hide the bad casting finish but it's only a clamp & it will get chipped anyway!

I was looking at my large collection of clamps & I might colour code them - blue for the decent ones like records, red & orange for the heavy engineering ones like carver & black for the cheap ones.

I colour coded my hammers, red for woodwork and blue for metal. It was going to be a thing for all the tools - then I bought a new bahco panel saw with a blue handle! Gah! System ruined. I still use the hammer scheme though.

I have a simple paint scheme for the tools I do up.
The nearest, or first found tin of metal paint.
Red. Blue. BRG.

Linseed and wax for wooden handles.

Or Dark oak wood stain for the saw handles etc. Finished of with a clear varnish.
