I'm still on the search for a 'door sander'. Basically a huge belt sander that a door can be laid on, held in place with a moveable lever with a pad on that presses the door against the belt and moves it about. I'm after it for graining up mill-finish profiles to give them the brush-finish look (not doors). I've been on the look out for ages with no joy. Anyone on the woodworking side of things point me in the right direction?

I know what you are on about Paul, they are also made for the metal industry. I have seen them used in metal polishers shops and the like. I do see them for sale from time to time in my general nose about the net, being fairly specialists they were not cheap though from memory.


I will take a look about my normal net haunts and see if anything is up for grabs.

I haven't seen one of those since the 80's as they were all replaced with far more efficient machines - they were bloody awful things in every respect!
What is "graining up mill-finish profiles" ?

If I see one I will let you know, but why not a portable hand belt sander?

Laser cut profiles come with a mill finish i.e a very dull, dirty finish and need 'sanding' or graining to give it a nice brush polished look. It takes some time to do, especially if the profile isnt quite flat or has small pits in it, and generates quite a lot of heat during the process. We have used a belt linisher for small bits, but after a minute or so, the profile becomes too hot to hold, even with gloves on. Plus having your fingers so close to the belt is not a good idea! Some of the profiles we use now are fairly large, thats why we need a decent sized belt. With a hand held machine, it is very difficult to get the grain running in the same direction, and avoid 'joints' in the sand lines. They need to be polished on a single-width belt - 800-900mm wide minimum really.

You need a drum sander rather than a pad sander i'd have said.....but you probably dont want one of the ones where the drum moves sideways by a lot
Some have belts some have a spiral wound drum.

On the proper ones, from vague recollection, you put the bit in, set touching height, then back it out, start the belts then set the conveyor running. Pretty slow moving i seem to recall. Quite a good one that, had numerous belts in it.

At the end of the day though, taking mill finish profiles to nice grained ones will take some doing...stainless is a lot tougher than wood.....

Paul, the sander at JMJ in Gerry’s link is known in woodworking as a ‘pad sander’ the belt would typically be 150mm to 200mm wide. They are used extensively to sand solid and veneered products.
The parts are laid on a table against a stop and the table is raised or lowered accordingly. A ‘pad’ that looks like a wooden float is used to apply pressure with one hand whilst oscillating the table with the other.
A skilled operator can sand a veneered panel 8 x 4 to a 240 finish ready for the spray booth with no sanding visible marks. I say skilled as the veneer is only 0.6mm before sanding, so its easy to ‘sand through’.
The drum type are known as a ‘wide belt sander’ and come up to 1000mm wide. They are more expensive to buy and run and slower to operate. They come into their own on large batch runs.
The pad sander is more versatile and less expensive and I am sure is the wat to go.

£5K tested but not refurbed Plus haggle factor - internet prices usually inflated so probably £4.5k ish plus haulage from west mids. VAT doesnt matter.

The work is there for it to earn its keep. The space isnt there to put it anywhere though

Beats a door sander doesnt it
