Sanderson Headstock

Just bought a Sanderson teleporter. 7m lift, 2.2 tonne something like that. 1986

anyway the thing is riddled with cracks on the headstock. Not to mention I don’t think the design is suitable for 1 tonne let alone 2.2. 1986

I seem to remember reading that they were always an issue.

Anyone know if there was a proper fix or if later models were altered?

If none such exists I’ll copy the manitou and make from scratch.

Need to order some dye penetrant!

If its been used as a loading shovel on a farm it will have taken a hammering, just as forks in construction not so.

Had two buckets with it and came from a farm

At least it will have the better pump, construction machines are fitted with slower pumps for H&S

Very poor design on the Sanderson's. The pivot point where the carriage attachés to the boom is far too narrow. With a 7ft wide bucket on, the twisting force is enormous at the pivot pin with an unequal load in it.

I will take a picture tomorrow. Our manitou is poorly hence the acquiring the old beast

I don't know why they made it so narrow. They could have splayed out the boom head and widened the pivot area. The carriage is plenty wide enough.

Back in the day I had a 6.25, 7.26 and then a terrible TL7, The headstocks were fine for the era and it will only be age and hrs. that have got to it, The 6.25s and 7.25s would suffer from the bottom pin boss on the crowd which would take out the center pin flanges, and would crack at high hrs on the boom, about halfway down the swan neck. Easiest carriage to convert to is pin and cone, the geometry is about the same, the problem with Manitou is they are designed for double point crowd movements, meaning buckets designed for a sanderson will struggle to get enough movement to tip fully.

Good trucks in there day, but were bloody alfal by the TL7s which were built by holdsworth industry's after Sanderson went to the wall, Claas finally bought what was left.

Well since we already have a manitou with bucket and the bucket that came with the Sanderson is an amalgamation of rusty scrap, I thought going to the manitou system, which has been working well for us for 15+ years, would be a good option.

Fabricating it wouldn’t be a problem as I can copy directly from the manitou. The bores could do with welding up or sleeving on the Sanderson. Good job I know a lineborer eh @rory1

Weren’t Sanderson the first to put telescopic handlers into production? Via a company in Ledbury Herefordshire?

Same sort of thing as our Sambron Brad. If the transmission is still ok its worth doing. That thing of ours has done a serious amount of work and still going strong.

Similar looking indeed. 4 speed manual box seems to work alright. Just sorting the brakes at the minute. Master cylinder was seized solid. New one ordered from Burton Power of all places.

On my laptop I should have a DXF file for profiling the side plates on the Manitou style headstock, Iv converted a few other headstocks for the dealers over the years, your welcome to it if its any help.

Other option which may be cheaper is to get hold of a new Manitou headstock and convert it, these often come up on ebay for not a lot of money as new machines are often sold with a different headstock to suit what the buyer already uses attachment wise, so the brand-new headstock is just removed and put in the scrap.

Thing I don't like about the Manitou system is if attachments are dropped off on the wonk it can be a job to get the cheeks into the attachment and the bottom pin pre Qhitch days which were heavy and awkward and the careless had a habit of not stowing it with no attachment and losing them, only plus side is it makes a good chain lift point when slinging stuff.

You see many a claw bent on them as well when people use it to shove trailers about with.

If you PM your email il dig out the file over the weekend, I think Manitou are all the same TBH It was just JCB who seam to like to confuse things by having two of there own systems.. Shame no one did a Ferguson job on headstocks years ago and come up with a universal system.

3 different jcb headstocks i think not 2!!

Absolutely ridiculous how many different ones there are i can think of 15 or more off the top of my head
