Are dual action and random orbit different names for the same thing or is there a difference in performance and finish?

Same thing afaik. The other commonly used one is 'rotary' [think......big angle grinder ]

No they are not quite the same thing, on a DA the pad is free to spin and on a random it is not there is also forced rotary DAs like the festool or the flex, while these are quite expensive they are the tits.....definitely better than sparrows or robins they are the tits.

I almost fell into that trap, if you have a look he said a 'random orbital sander' which is the same as a DA and different to an orbital sander.
