Sand blasting a kit car chassis

Morning all, just being lazy here a si could do it by hand and with a grinder, but its the only job i can be doing with, i have stripped my kit car back to bare chassis ready for the new engine and axle etc, so before i paint it obviousley i need to clean it back.

So anyone local to Radcliffe, Manchester that can come to do the job and more importantly at what price?

I cant take it anywhere as i dont have the transport or roof rack for the wifes car.

Sandblasting yourself is a horrible job so I can fully understand why you want somebody else to do the work. The mess it leaves is horrendous so you might regret somebody doing it in your drive and I reckon you should rethink having it done on the blasters premises. At the same time they should also be able to spray a primer coat to stop rust starting.
I understand you don't have a method yourself to transporting yourself but for the cost of a secondhand roof rack off eBay it's got to be worth the expense. Do you have any mates who could transport ? Maybe somebody here who is local to you might be able to help

Hi Paul, great minds just been looking for a cheap roofrack, its a peugeot SW ( estate ) with roof rails so there should be plenty about.
I dont mind the mess in the work area i have a 20sqf area fenced 7 foot high all around and it cant get much messier lol. But i know what you mean kida.

I transported a kit car chassis for my son long time ago, same situation, roof rails but no bars, We just lashed a couple of lengths of timber to the rails from side to side. worked a treat.

The blasting media produces a fine dust which blows everywhere, much better to take it to a blasters.

Sod it, why be lazy, do it myself, its not al that bad with rust so i am going to get 500ml of Vactan and treat the rusted areas, not that many or bad but for the front cross member i cut out to replace when i get some 40mm box. Just want to get this done before i start fitting the new engine.

Have you a tow bar? If so stick the back axle back in, and tow it.

it may not look much but spaceframe chassis take a lot of time up to blast even with a large blaster. they need turning umpteen times and theres more grit missing the metal than hitting it and there not cheap to get done

So little to the frame its scary really, i cleaned back all the loose paint now and ready for the Vactan. what was i moaning about, all of a few hours with the grinder and done, and all of a320 with the vactan and paint.

I picked mine up from the factory. I was only 18, and knew sod all about welding yet still knew their welding was bad in places, and seeing the guys running round chassis jigs frantically welding away, I can see why.

The exact reason idiots buy these kit cars an other cheap and keep the log book and strip for parts to sell on. saves on getting an IVA for there cars they build, but they get caught out in the end when they cant sell there car or the buyer does, i have an X mate who i would put BIG money on has done an insurance job on it tht cnat sell it legit and has stripped it and sold it for parts and V5, he is a complete fecking half wit if he has. but thats him.

I was offered a pilgrim sumo, complete, granada running gear, with reg, which had an easily repairable front end damage. £400... Stupidly I turned it down as I already had a lotus esprit and a westfield!

A friend of mine has a Dax Cobra with a pre 63 plate on and the V5 states AC Cobra as of course does the Tax discs supplied, that really throws people at car shows. I must check next time I see the car if the Tax is Nil. There was a time when you could get away with all sorts by post with DVLA.

depends on when it was built also if more than a certain percentage of the car uses ac parts it can legally called a AC but that info is more than a few years old
with the historic tax if the donar car was pre 73 when it was built it will still retain it's tax free status assuming it was built a fair time ago but not if you build one now

Thinking back, the donor car might have been an S Type Jaguar even though the axles etc are XJ6/12.

even XJ6 first made in 1968 so tax free if built a fair time ago but if you built it today IVA and all the lot etc and no free tax

Yes, I suppose it would be thinking about it. The guy he bought the Cobra off was claiming it to be a '98 built car, I doubted this and while they were haggling over the price I scrutinised the mountain of paperwork and found a factory receipt from Dax for the chassis kit dated '89 that matched the chassis number. Apparently a new kit from Dax today is £35k.

One of the reasons I bought my 1985 Marlin (built on 1974 Marina 1800TC) was it was already a Q reg as no way the design would it ever pass an IVA test today. You see Marlins on eBay and they are still registered on the donor Herald or Marina so are only suitable for parts.
