sand blaster?

hi guys im not sure if this is the right part of the forum but ive bought a small sand blasting gun and am not sure if using kiln dried sand would work for what i want to do but the price of the correct grit is more than i can afford so trying the cheap option but any advice would be great, im just wanting to give my discovery's chassy a wee clean and underseal.

25kg of J blast is about 7quid. A bag of 10kg Kiln sand is around a fiver. So the J blast is cheaper, and you won't have to sieve it... and if you save it it can be reused, unlike sand.

have u got a suction gun or a pressurised pot ??if its a suction gun it will be nowhere powerfull enough . as for using kiln dried sand its not recomended on here . risk of silicosis

There are suction guns and suction guns, certainly the hobby types (Clarke &c) aren't up to it. A professional one may be, but you need a heck of a lot of air to make any progress.

thanks for that i was going to wear a good quality dust mask as the whole silica thing did come to mind i have priced grit and been quoted stupid money £24 for a 10kg tub ive not got that kind of money but will keep looking cheers again

If you pass Penrith there is a company called Lakeland abrasives that did me 100kg of there blasting media for £22 inc vat!

Hodge Clemco - last lot I bought was £5.50 + VAT, for 25 Kg probably about a year ago.

Wickes sell Kiln dried sand for £4.29 per 25 Kg

Although it's hit and miss whether it's dry or not.

You would have to dry the sand out thoroughly.
Took a couple of hours with blow lamp. Incidentally paid £2.99 some years back for kids playing sand mixed in with 2 tubs glass bead from Machine Mart.

Shouldnt actually use it theres been discussions on here.

As an experiment I bought 25 Kg of sharp sand, I think it was about 1.25 for 25Kg. It took 10KwH to dry it out in an oven, blooming ages to sieve it and with what I was left with J-Blast worked out cheaper.

B&Q do crushed glass for laying paving stones, but that too needs drying and sieving. Just not worth the hassle.
