SAME explorer hydraulics

Anyone got any experience of the above? I’ve got neighbours in for a bit of work and one of the issues is the 3 point hitch won’t drop without weight on it. Goes up fine but will not fall empty unless my fat carcass stands on it.

My first port of call would normally be to look for a flow rate control valve on the lowering side, but it doesn’t have the usual in front of the seat and I’ll be ******** if I can find one anywhere else on it. Anyone got any ideas?

We sometimes get this if the pick up hitch rods are tight or even the pins it pivots on are dry, works ok with weight on but not when empty.

Been through the lot with a big tub of grease and an oil can. Initially thought the pickup hitch rods were seized as they’re bent, but I’ve taken them out of the equation and still no better off

I've had ones that take grease no bother but it's just coming out one point and not getting round the pins. If all that's fine what age machine is it and do you know what hydraulic controls it has, same were generally pretty high specced.

It’s mid 80s at a guess, explorer 70. Pair of spools on the back and the hydraulic lift controls, plus tool depth setting

We have an explorer 90 I've recently done the forward reverse synchronizer. But I cannot remember there being a rate of drop control. I have a workshop manual I will have a look

I’ve got the workshop manual for this, but the hydraulics section is somewhat lacking in its info. In the troubleshooting guide it states if it won’t lower it could be the lowering valve jammed, but doesn’t actually state which part is the lowering valve!

Will it drop if the oil return pipe is slackened off...might not be a ram problem.

Yes it will, I have a feeling I’ve identified the lowering valve on the crap-o-drawing but yet to find it on the machine!

Lowering valve might be adjustable Dan when you find it or might have crud in the valve orifice

All the linkage control valves are in the lift cover there's a large bolted cover on the top of it.

Yes I’ve been in there but I don’t think it’s a linkage problem, I think as roofman says it might be crud holding the valve

I recently had a similar problem with a Kubota 9960 and it was one of the assister rams. Water had leaked down past the rod seal and rusted the cylinder ,being single acting no oil ever got to it amazing the seal was still holding. But that only stuck at the top.

This sticks at any point if the load is removed, which makes me believe it’s a valving issue

If removing the pipe let's them drop freely then I would say you're right that it's the valve, either it's jammed or adjusted down. Our 2650 jd has the adjuster between your feet under the seat, the amount of times I get told its not working and go to it and they've knocked it with their feet.

I have seen new sames like that lift slow to go down without weight, you would think with time they would speed up with some wear, I think it’s the assistor rams they can fill with rust n crap, you can take out the asistor rams block the pipe with a blank and see is the lift freer

It lifts perfectly quickly , it’s just the down that’s the problem

Heyy,sorry for bothering i have the same problem on my same explorer 70 and i'm wondering have u found out what the issue was?

I suspect the rams needed a good servicing as cracking a hose at the ram didn’t make any difference to lowering off
