salt water and corrosion

I'm new to tig welding aluminium to a point up till now iv been very lucky because it's either been on a new casting or brand new tube so all has been going very for me because it's been easy to do with good pleasing results. But right now on the ramp Iv got last years national champions jet ski that I'm helping do a big engine and jet unit swop on and as this boat will be going up and down the country racing at the top I want to get some facts right about what I'm about to weld on the boat so 1 it lasts and 2 looks good to match the rest of my machine work.

My job as well as make all the steering is to weld all the water pipes up that are aluminium and have seen a lot of salt water but I'll all so be adding in new aluminium along the way what I'm trying to find out is corrosion going to be a issue here should I take in to account that salt will of eaten its self deep in to the aluminium and if so what can I do to over come this.

Iv all ready picked out 5556 filler rod that iv been told is good with corrosion in lots of water and Cleaning the best I can of course will be high up on my prep work but would a good soaking in fresh water for a few days help me over come a up and coming problem with dirt and sea salt in the older aluminium or am I just thinking about this way to much ?

sandblast all the corosion of the old aluminium 1st back to clean metal then your certain[/quote]

I was under the impression that blasting alloy can hold the crap in.

the alloy being sorft tends to get beating.
holding crap in.

its something I have read but cant say with certainty

If it's being used in a championship i wouldn't be taking any chances and would be chucking the old aluminium away and using new.

I'd also be looking for someone with plenty of experience of tig welding aluminium as you mention you haven't done too much.

as wyn said i would take no chances and cut it all out and put in all new pipe

yes depending how sharp the media is it can get engrained in and pitted .fine sand cant
