safmig 215c stopped working

hi all am new to the site, my mig has not been used sor some time now about 18 months when you press the trigger you can usually hear the solanoid kick in and the wire motor feeds out this is not happening could it be the motor or the circuit bourde that controls it, or should i leave it to the big boys and there big repair costs, any help would be great

Hi,

first thing would be a visual inspection...

plug fuse OK? test it with an ohm meter or try a spare one.
plug wires loose?
do you get any lights at all?

Pop the lid off the unit (mains plug disconnected!)...
are there any loose wires?
loose components on circuit boards?
discoloured components?
rusty connections?

split the torch...
are there any loose connection?
rusty connections?

After this you'll need a voltmeter to continue but please let us know what you find...

plug o/k main lights light fan comes on two fuses o/k split gun run Ohm meter on the two prongs gun o/kevery thing seems o/k no rust or burnt components.

Hi,

OK, do you get any voltage at the torch, input and the output side of the switch?

Then it's a case of tracing the wiring into the unit and seeing where it gets to.

A bit of poke'n'hope required...

Could be a number of things, first thing i would look at is the torch. Have you got yourself a multimeter or can get your hands on one. Im assuming its a euro type torch on there that you can disconnect. On the euro torch connector there should be two small brass pins, put a resistance meter across the pins on the torch, and you should get a reading. If you have no multimeter it will be difficult to test bits, but you can still check the torch trigger switch by placing a small bit of wire into the two holes where the torch pins go. This will have the effect of closing the curcuit, like the trigger does. If the wire feed etc works you have a torch problem. let us know how you get along

took touch off again and resistance was o?k on the two pins, put wire across two holes in the welder and the motor started to run, so i stripped the gun and put a meter over the switch now there is 3 wires on this blue-black and gray, am getting a reading of 11 volts, so the switch is working i think hehehehe, but when i pull the trigger its nit working, took the gun off put the wire across and the motor started up, ( Head Noodled )

had a good think on this and dismantled the other end of the touch the side that plugs in put the meter over the two pins going to the switch and got nothing so it looks like i need a switch, good job you lads are here as this would have been expensive to me pitty i cant buy you a pint, thanks peter and darren

found fault on mig

changed switch but fault still there found it to be the two prongs that go from the gun to the welder they are not making a good connection, welder now working fine with a little clean and tightening thanks gang mike
