Safety issues

Hi new to the site very impressed.
Would like to pass on a couple of safety issues we where informed of when I was at Babcocks ,as there are a lot of home users who may not have been made aware

Dont weld with contact lenses they can stick to your eyes blinding you ?

Dont weld with cigerette gas lighter in your pocket a bloke in USA died his chest was blown out.

dont weld by aircon can cause chlorine gas nasty.

As far as I know the facts above are true

The contact lense story is a very old urban myth, I first heard it in the early 80s and it comes around from time to time,

The lighter in pocket, I saw the remains of a pair of overalls that a fellow welder was wearing with a leaky plastic lighter in the top pocket, luckily apart from a thermal beard trim and soiled underwear he was ok, could have been nasty though.

Contact lens and butane lighter are myths. No doubt people have been inured by lighters but then they have by mobile phones too

Heard the contact lens myth many times,and I envy the lucky so and so who gets aircon in his welding bay

Trust me the gas lighter stories are not myths. I have been a safety professional for over 20 years and much of that was spent in foundries, steelworks and secondary melting. We had incidents with lighters to the point that we even had custom lighter prohibition notices made. They can burst (as labs have shown and videoed) with significant force and they can leak (possibly through the tab getting pressed) and the gas wicks into clothing. This can ignite and turn into a fireball for want of a better description. Sorry guys - seen the evidence first hand on many occasions. In fact in ALCAN sites, they are banned entirely.

You should see the effect of this combined with a synthetic shell suit! Trust me, he was a mess.

I'd heard the contact lens one, but hadn't realised it was a myth. I asked the bloke in the opticians about it, and he didn't seem to think it would be a problem unless I was not using a mask.
