Safety film on domestic low level glass

In a domestic environment, internal doors with low-level non toughened/non laminated/non safety glass...

Acceptable if they are coated with a film such as this?

I've always specced toughened. Interesting though.

Easiest way to reassure is speak to your local BC

they use it on a school i do work for to bring up to safety standards on existing glass . on new builds safety glass would be used

In non rental domestic then should be good … best applied to both sides, must be if it’s double glazed

They will not fit non tempered glass if the window is less than a metre from the room floor round here.

What age are the doors/glass? What size are the panes? Acceptable to whom?

I think the current legal requirement came in with Part N of the Building Regs. (now absorbed into Part K) but Building Regs. are not retrospectively applied, so that is where the age matters.

I did read about some slight exemption for Georgian-style paned doors with dimension less than 250mm but cannot find a proper reference to it, so that is where size might matter.

If the situation is not subject to building regs., or the requirements of a rental property, then you can do your own risk assessment (likelihood/severity) and mitigate the risks until the level is acceptable. As MikeOS says, the film on both sides is probably the best thing short of replacement.

Replace with toughened pattern glass... all panes need to be done

Or plain laminated glass

Trying to get the glazing beads off from under donkey's years worth of paint is pretty much going to destroy the doors.

I think i'll just replace the doors with a couple of 4-panel pre-primed hollow doors and be done with it.
