Safe light for under stairs.

Had a bit of a scare the other day. The under stairs cupboard is used as a toy cupboard for my little ones. It's a state! The kids fill it with their toys and (sometimes) put them back at the end of night. However one of kids hit the light bulb with a metal pole from a toy and smashed it. Aswell as the glass worry the end of the pole is black and you can see where the electric has shorted acros it and left arc marks. Luckily the end my boy was holding was plastic, thank god. The cupboard is only 1.5 meters high. Ive disconnected the power at source but do want a light in there. What I'm after is a replacement light I can fit. One where a bulb can fit in sideways and has a strong plastic cover over it. I've looked on the usual diy websites but can't find much. I know there is some very knogable sparkys on here that may be able to help.

Thanks bright spark that looks ideal! Didn't find that in my search. Are replacmeant bulbs cheap and redally available. Are they simple to wire in. I'm no sparky. Is it just simple case of live and neautral.

Yes dunk. I was really scared. Was shacking like mad. I heard the zap of the electric on the pole and my heart skipped a beat. Soon felt better when I heard my lad was giggling.

yes just live neutral and earth. the bulbs and fittings are available at screwfix dunno how much mind .the 16 watt 2 d bulbs are about 3 quid and last years

I've made the same suggestion for a mate who has boarded his loft out for his son to use. He was on about getting some sort of shallow lights and I suggested LED ones designed as interior lights in cars/boats. You can get 30-odd and 40-odd LED ones for £3-4 and then run them off a brick in a socket. Each light would then have it's own switch so you could run some or all of them as you choose and switching the socket off will kill them all. The other advantage in both your situations is that they are only around 30mm deep.

No I meant a transformer that plugs into a 13 amp socket - we just call them bricks because they are a square-ish heavy-ish lump.

If it's only a small cupboard you could get one of those battery operated push lights. They are about £2.50 at Wilko, often cheaper.

ive got one with a dusk to dawn censor on my house outside and only ever replaced the bulb once in 2 years .
