Sack Barrow inner tube problems

No idea about the old bikes, so couldn't say. Having driven a Jap import still sporting it's original, aged, hardened tyres though, I can mention that one from experience. You can literally power slide without having to add the power. A fun experience on a rear wheel drive in wet conditions. Jap rubber still tends to be unjustly slated for that reason, probably amongst others.

Well yeah it's a bit weird, the only Japanese tyre manufacturers I know of are class as quality tyres. Anything really made in Japan these days will be classed as a quality product, it's far from cheap to manufacture there now days.

Aye, like I say, I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with their gear personally. You have to remember that they don't appear to do massive amounts of mileage over there, (hence why a lot of the imports are usually quite low mileage), so tyres don't wear out half as fast, plus they probably have their vehicles stored undercover, so UV degradation probably doesn't play too much of a factor either, so you can end up with tyres which are easily over ten years old and seemingly in mostly unworn condition by the time they get over here. Rubber is rubber though. Even the best of rubbers generally don't age well, especially if it doesn't see much use. It tends to harden.

It's akin to a drive belt on a machine. If you had two identical machines; Run one machine fairly frequently over five years and you'll have a belt which gradually wears but stays quite supple. Leave the other machine untouched & unused for five years though, and you could remove that drive belt and it probably would hold its shape on removal and be practically rock solid. Use rubber and it does degrade and wear. Don't use rubber and it still suffers degradation, just in a different manner. The same happens whichever part of the world that rubber came from.

Then how did you make the old wives tale of crap Jap rubber factor in anywhere? I'd be surprised if there's a single sack trolley tyre out there which originated from japan.

No idea but in my day jap tyres was carp will have to see if i can find a makers mark on the tyre

I already know I'm a lost cause.

I imagine most modern sack truck and barrow tyres come from china, with the posher options being taiwanese.

That's what I'm guessing too.

Might also be worth checking as to whether all of your neighbours seem to have fairly new tyres on their trolleys.

I have pneumatic tyres on a steel framed sack barrow which has wheel rims of pressed steel on steel ball bearings sets pressed into aluminium hubs . It's nine years old , when I got it I put half a can of the instant tyre seal gunge in each tyre . I've never put much more than 20 psi in them , the inflation lasts a year or so before needing a top up with the cars air compressor pump .
The barrow lives in the garage where the wheels are not subject to sunlight . it's starting to show slight cracking around the tread form . I'll be fitting some of the latest puncture less tyres when these give up the ghost as I've got them on my wheel chair and small electric buggy . They give such a comfortable ride compared to the really hard rubber ones .
Obviously they don't get abused like a workshop sack barrow would nor are they subjected to bits of sharp or red hot metal on /in them.

It is the inner tubes that are deteriorating, they just seem to be rotting away from the outside in. They are filled with OKO puncture preventative, but I have used OKO for over 30 years in my bicycles, barrows, trolleys. garden trucks, ride on mower and trailer without an issue. The drum of OKO I am using is almost 18 years old now, but none of the other tubes it is in have or are deteriorating........ my hybrid bike tubes were filled with the same stuff back in November at the same time the sack barrow had its last set of inner tubes. My hybrid bike stood outside in the garden from Christmas until the end of March, but has been used a couple of times a week since then for quick trips into the city, a couple of 20 milers and one 40 miler to set up and take down Norwich Alleycat treasure checkpoints. The sack barrow on the other hand never moved, maybe 10 mtrs at the most or less in the same time.

My compressor is drained down daily after spray painting and oil has never shown in the filter/water trap. I have a separate water trap regulator set to and fixed blue recoil hose exclusively for use with the tyre inflater and blow nozzle 90PSI, I have a separate water trap and reg on a yellow recoil hose exclusively for paint spraying, and a separate water trap lubricator and red recoil hose as my and tool line with is currently plugged as I very rarely use air tools these days. so I am absolutely certain that oil has not entered the airlines. However, I have used my bike track pump to inflate these inner tubes but that has been lubricated with PTFE spray, and like I said above other tubes have never deteriorated.

I have a feeling that the supplier I use doesn't shift a lot of this size of tube, and the ones I have purchased from them over the last 5 years are unbranded and probably all from the same batch. So I think I'll get another pair of tubes from a different supplier, but this time I think I may follow the lead of my 69 year old friend, Keith with whom I share 32 beehives. I made us a wheeled tricycle barrow with two 26" MTB wheels and one 20" BMX wheel to move honey filled supers from the hives located in fields so neither of us had to physically carry them. Keith has been using this barrow for a couple of weeks and last night he told me he suffered a thorn puncture in the first couple of days, so he popped the valve cores out and pumped the tubes full of Toolstation's cheapest silicone sealant and has been merrily transport 30-40kg loads across fields, muddy paths through the woods and ballasted farm tracks without a single problem. So I will give silicone filled inner tubes a go and see what happens.

I've just bought a sack truck from Aldi in their reduced offers, cost me a tenner, it says on they tyres that it's fitted with nylon tubes, I don't know if this is to get over the perishing problem, I've just never come across them before. Really good truck though for the money.

I feel your pain, my wheel barrow tire / tube are exactly the same - perished and split, I had a complete wheel in the shed as a spare, when I needed it I found it was in worse condition that the one on the barrow that had been outside all the time
