No idea about the old bikes, so couldn't say. Having driven a Jap import still sporting it's original, aged, hardened tyres though, I can mention that one from experience.
You can literally power slide without having to add the power.
A fun experience on a rear wheel drive in wet conditions. Jap rubber still tends to be unjustly slated for that reason, probably amongst others.
