Yeah i tend to agree about jap stuff being souless, but reliability is such a good trait in any vehicle. No being worried about will it get you home, or start acting up in the rain or snow. What about getting an older volvo wardrobe on wheels ? They were also reliable.

it sounds like the garage has just managed to free off the saab engine or they have fitted new shells and not cleaned up the crank if its knocking, when a crank seizes there is usually some transfer of white metal onto the crank which needs removing

Just make sure you get one with a heated rear screen to keep your hands warm when pushing it in winter....

i have the same issue with new cars. when i did a stint in esse for work i was given a 15 plate s-max the first week and a 64 plate golf the second week and both were like driving a doctors office...nothing at all that gave you the sense that you were in control.
one of the only reasons that i occasionaly like the megane is the fact that apart from ABS it has no driver aids. the steering isnt too bad either considering its electric column and dry rack, but its not a patch on hydraulic

Parts would only be expensive if anything actually broke though
There's not been 1 thing that's needed replacing on my dad's one yet .. It'll probably now need some sort of maintenance considering its 20 years old but my dad still won't do anything
That being said, my insurance on one is £4k compared to the <£1k on the disco so I'm staying british
