ive been offered a saab on a 2006 plate, 19 TiD engine, auto box and in relatively good condition for £200

the snag...it doesnt run. im told it needs injectors (it wont start at all) and that the auto box smokes when running, but if its flicked over to steptronic (or whatever brand name saab use) then the smoke stops so im thinking that may just be in need of new oil and filter?

what injectors would fit that engine as he reckons saab injectors are £100 each...

the thing is i have driven the car, not long after this guy bought it as he managed to smash the key fob and asked me to put all the gubbins into a new fob for him, he dropped the car off to me and his wife took him to work, then i picked him up from work with his car and it was lovely and smooth to drive, nice and quiet, went well etc...i was quite impressed with it as ive never really considered a saab. a few weeks ago the water pump seized, he had the work done by a garage and a short while after it wouldnt start, took it back and they said injectors were faulty and needed replacing. he didnt want to pay £100 a hit so went back to his old car and the saab has sat since.

Have you rang around a few scrapyards to see if injectors are available secondhand ?

not yet. only spoketo the guy half hour ago. the megane is going for its test at 4 so will ask my mechanic friend what he knows, if i can get the problems sorted for under £300 i will be happy with it. full service history done on the dot every time at main dealer, low mileage, good condition apart from some dent ripples in the rear passenger door, full leather...

It's the risk we take....I brought the 530d dmw .had a little oil leak and brakes needed sorting. ..am now 2000 pound in and still going......it might be fine with a few bits doing to it....or is could be a nightmare. .

just found out its the 16v version of the engine i have in my alfa...would my injectors fit it? the saab has about 30bhp more than the alfa, would that matter?

The water pump is driven from the cam-belt, so when the water pump seizes it usually throws off the belt and then bends/breaks a few bits that "people in the know" tell me are pretty important.

The engine is most likely the same as that in the vectra's, it's a Fiat.

It is a great engine, powerful and fairly economic, you just need to replace the water-pump when changing the cam-belt.

Its based on the Vectra from memory.

I had a 57 plate 93 1.9 diesel, it was a great car until the electrical gremlins kicked in!

Mine had a phase of not starting, turned out to be a module under the ignition unit in the centre console.

There are a few good independent saab specialist around here, a bit far for you but are very helpful on the phone. If you end up getting it drop me a PM and I will give you their details.

all that work has been done, from what he said there were new water pump, new belt and tensioner, new head gasket while they were there, few other bits done, think it had new thermostat, possibly new rings too. it ran fine again up untilt eh injector problem so im happy that its just the injectors at fault now

Sounds a bit ominous to me, water pump, head gasket & so on, then won't start, "Oh dear it's the injectors" sounds like something hasn't been fitted properly maybe, could be serious, they've knackered something, or just a wiring fault where the heads been off. Seems a bit of a coincidence that all 4 injectors have gone together. (I presume it's common rail)

The auto box smoking sound expensive to me, I know nothing about modern auto boxes, but something got to be generating a lot of heat for that

The engine is fiat
The car platform is GM (Epsilon platform)
Basically GM wanted a common rail diesel engine, fiat wanted a newer car platform...so they did a deal
Vectra C
Signum
Fiat Croma
Saab 9-3 and 9-5
Caddilac HTS or something like that

are all based on the same platform and a lot of bits are the same...engines are identical

Check the spill off pipes first, they perish and make it a pig to start (basically lets air in and fuel then glugs back to the tank)
Also check the electrical connections to the injectors (known fault and there is a repair kit)

starters go lazy and don't get enough pace up to fire the car...(basically if the pump isn't being spun up fast enough, it won't build pressure and if the pressure doesn't meet a minimum value...it won't fire...

1 failed injector out of 4 will stop it firing...

OPCOM or a code reader should tell you whats stopping it firing, might even give you the injector number (left to right)

The injectors MIGHT fit (the engines are similar Z19DT (120) and Z19DTH (150)

Get a puller kit though before you start as they can be utter swines to remove...injectors should also be coded to the car but doesn't overly matter....

Thats what I used on mine, worked fine and shifted a rusted in injector

The head on them has sacrificial rockers, generally if the belt snaps...the rockers break before valves get damaged...though the rocker arms are £10 each and up to 16 can snap...

The auto box could be an issue...at worst get its number and have a look for a used unit off ebay...plenty of cars being broken for parts (sadly often some very nice examples)

will be having a look at it tomorrow and see if i can get it started with a bit of fiddling about, if i can then i might take a gamble, if not he can keep it

with that list of issues I would be looking to pay scrap value at the most, could be an easy fix could be a money pit, without an obd scan i would not touch it

all 4 injectors sounds unlikely, but ecu or pump would be where i would be looking after checking that is has fuel and system is not leaking... cant remember if these have a lift pump in the tank?

i have a basic program that should read it, i also have a paid program that deals with fiat and alfa engines but i doubt that will do much as it needs to read the ISO first and it wont be on their system.

if i can get it running i will offer him £120 and take a chance

Seem to remember that Wheeler Dealers had one and there were steering rack bush issues letting it float about and something that required an engine brace or bulkhead reinforcement to deal with some other problem!
