Rust remover (easy!!)

Probably been asked a lot... I'm about to change my oil and when I got to my (home made) ramps I had forgotten to cover them up and they are now rusty ..still solid but I want to clean and paint them. Any easy (cheap) methods I can use?? Thanks guys...

Joking aside - for those I would use an angle grinder with wore knot wheel to de rust and brush / small gloss roller apply expoxy primer and top coats.

A far better mix is to use 100gm citric, 40gm of washing soda (tesco green bags) and a squirt of fairy liquid per 1L of water.
It is reusable many times. Doesn't turn the metal black. And doesn't etch the metal so much.
It is a similar solution to Evaporust.

Easy? Get somebody else to blast them. Not cheap though.
Cheap? Probably a wire knot on a grinder and then the corners and odd bits by hand. Not easy though.

You could soak it in vinegar or citric or similar, but that won't be easy due to the shape, and probably not cheap.
Needle scalar would help, but again not cheap.

The @fizzy mixture in a bath wouldn't need to be that deep as they appear to only be rusty on the blunt end so it would only need to be 2 or 3 inches deep

I have good results with epoxy paint and roller.

Just choose the black urethane foam rollers that don't melt with solvent.

(don't ask me how I know this..?)

Fizzy & I made up a couple of gallons very quickly and it's not at all expensive .. make a wooden frame with four inch sides double line it with thick polyethene stapled to the sides to make a tank several inches bigger than your ramps . Fill to 3/4 with the our Deruster and soak each side for several hours after using a wire brush to remove most of the flaky crud.

Wash off in clean water and they'll stay rust free for a long time due to the chemical reaction of the deruster with the rust particles . Use a jug to decant the used deruster to poly barrels etc. , it's good for quite a few derusting session and as far as i have observed the 5 litre containers out in my garden have not frozen despite - 7 oC a few nights ago .

If you leave the steel in the deruster for too long 3 days or more the metal goes slimy & black . On polished things like wood working chisels left inthe deruster for too long , you'll notice a spidery web of very fine black lines once you clean the black gunge off & dry the chisel off .
