That mix I use seems to hold up well. Not had any rust appearing on the stuff in the shed which I've coated so far. Linseed oil, beeswax and turpentine are the main ingredients.

A trigger spray bottle of Duck oil is hanging off the chip guard of my lathe. The only place I can keep it means that it has to get covered in it after every use, it takes no time at all and isn't too bad when you next touch it.
Some of the methods suggested may work for long term storage but if the machine will be used then I think a lighter product which can be easily sprayed is appropriate. Chain lube could be good although not that pleasant to work with.
Grease you would not want to touch! Also, I like things which will creep into any bits you can't easily reach or miss.

I wouldn't want any sort of grease or wax on sideways chucks horrible stuff. duck oil every time

Oh, and if the machine is to be used you'd not want swarf sticking to the greasy areas. I'd say it's suitable for laying up over a period of many months plus but little else.
