Rust protection in RHS

I am thinking on getting a boat galv`d but as we know paint is cheaper and by sounds easier but i dont want to get back on that subject here.

So painting the outside is easy enough but if you want to protect the inside if using a box section or tube even there is i think another way.

I am sure i have seen a similar way on car chassis and cills etc that need to be protected when replaced. ?

The idea is to have a small ID tube of chosen length and make .5mm if not smaller holes along the one end of about 12 inch all around the tube.

Other end fit to a compressor solvent gun and fill with an oil or the likes, push the tube into the chassis and draw the tube out as you spray to line/protect the box section.

any thoughts ?

i imagine dropping your boat in on the slip into the canal with rails full of oil will get you banned from the waterways pretty quickly, and it wouldnt make you popular sea launching either.if you want it to last, get it galvoed, if you want it to last a bit longer ungalvoed, leave the rails open ended and just flush through with the hose and sit it nose down on the jockey wheel so it runs out

Well not engine oil but the stuff they use on the cars type do it to. dont know what it is. some sort of oil. But then Veg oil will be safe enough on canals.

The ends would be welded up i should think. then smaller holes drilled in to get the tube in then capped off.

I wonder if a car underseal could be used, my take a bit of thinning down though.

You are probably thinking of Waxoyl, it was a very common anti rust treatment and lots of garages made a lot of money drilling holes into chassis sections and spraying it in, have used it myself and if warmed up it thins and runs into crevices etc very well.

I can't however vouch for how good it is or is not, I usually sold the cars before being able to assess the treatment.

Back in the early 90's I had to replace the sills on a Mini that had been waxoyled from new, when I cut the old sills off all the areas where the waxoyl had reached were absolutely pristine, it was the bits they missed had rotted out.

I've bought cars that have been treated with waxoyl...

I can say it hides rust very well - until you pick at it a bit at which point bloody gert lumps drop off and you assess how much mig wire you have in stock

I've had up to about A5 paper sized sheets of it fall off chassis rails - looking perfect on what was the external side and on the side that was once attached to the chassis is a film of rust - imagine how the rail fared.

Then, when (not if) you do have to do a repair you have the wonderful prospect of it catching fire (because you'll never remove it all). Remember the opening credits of Tour Of Duty on telly where they drop the napalm? Yep, it's like that, but worse, and on your head/arm/inner thigh.

Maybe it works better if you reapply it every 3 months, but I seriously doubt it.

Horrible, nasty, hateful stuff. Only to be applied in 2 cases:

1. You're selling a rotbox of a car and you have a disposable mobile number and no conscience.

2. You're a bit special and spent your formative years licking the windows on the short bus.
