Looking for some advice as a newbie - I’ve been welding up some mild steel box to make frames for furniture. I grind the welds and then blacken the whole frame with steel blackener. I then rinsed with DI water, dried and finished with 3 coats of Renaissance wax. The next day, I had a patchy orange film over the frame - rust colour . It sort of wipes off so I wiped it all off and recoated in wax and it’s back again today. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the advice.

The water might be your issue? I'd use gunwash or similar myself and test again

You might try a phosphoric acid wash after drying and pre the wax. Treat it as you would if using Jenolite. "How do I use it?":
Or you could use genuine Jenolite. Just thinking of cost.

Work kindly let me have 5L of descaler. It's about 50% phosphoric acid strength. Works a treat. It's been talked about on here before but it's something on the lines it turns unstable iron oxide into stable, black, iron sulphide. Obviously on heavy rust the danger is you're just converting the top layer (of rust). For the flash rusting you're talking about it should work fine.
