bit of an unusual one here regarding the design of panels, folds, seams and rust...
i have a 30+ year old truck and am continually astounded by the excellent condition of the panels... Sure, it gots a couple of dimes of corrosion around but the panel next to those little blemishs is sort of like new.... It was rust proofed and the condition of the waxy film is excellent...
Im tidying up some of those few dimes around one or two spots made it to the seams...
In particular the bottom of the window sill on the drivers door, where the rusts eats its way up into the spotwelded seam of where the inner and outer skins of the doors are pressesed...
The interesting thing is the rust doesnt jump over from skin to skin where the flange meets...
In fact, peeling away the damaged panel often leave the other flange spotless making it easy to spot up new sections
so i wanted to ask...
what is it about the design of lap join or spot-welded join that keep it so rust free for many years??
and then, what is it about bead welding making the above preferential....
