just changed the thermostat on my audi as it was'nt getting warm enough-only running @ about 50,to my surprise the old one would'nt open when placed in boiled water!! now i know the guage is correct as the heater is hotter now & its running @ 90-95.any explanations?

I'm guessing it's just curiosity which, as long as the op isn't a cat, isn't anything to be concerned about.
How's the cooling system layed out on the Audi? Unless it's laid out a weird way so that the thermostat works backwards to convention (closed is 'open' from the rads POV) it's probably as already said... stat fails and got stuck open. As you disturbed the housing to replace it the spring managed to close it but because it's dead it sits there doing nothing when you test it

My A4 1.8T (1999) has needed the thermostat checked and or changed for a while now but as it looks to be almost hidden under the water pump so I have been putting it off. Which Audi have you got and is it as difficult to access as I think it will be?
