Router firmware update

Just received a nudge from Netgear to update the firmware on my router. Printed out and followed the instructions and using their update Genie repeatedly got Error 1 .
So then tried the long way around by downloading and unzipping the update to the desktop for manual updating but been scared off by messages about writing down settings that may have to be reentered manually and the end of the world etc etc.
Just being a wuse (spelling?) or wise to leave things as they are?

If I was in your situation..

I would try and remember how much hassle it was to set it up in the first place.

If it was a pain in the **** I would leave everything alone if it is still working.

If you do want to update it then log into the router first and take some photos with your phone of every page of the router settings.
If any of the passwords are blanked out make sure you know them. You can try changing them to check. Write the new ones down tempory and change them back to the existing ones after the update.

They may take longer than you think to update. Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter and DO NOT turn off the power until you are 100% sure it has finished updating.

May also be worth typing "the router name firmware problems " into Google first. Sometimes people will have problems with updates and it normally takes them months to release another update to fix it!

There's normally a backup function where you backup the config and then update it. I have seen it before where the router needs to be set back to factory defaults before the update will take. Once updated you should be able to upload your saved config file and should all be back to normal. To be safe though at least make a note of your broadband login details.
