Round Bar Grade?

Hi folks,

I'm wanting to make a ring roller so I can roll flat bar and round bar, looking at 30mm bright round bar (if anyone thinks this isn't enough, or less would do say so!) Do i want EN8 or EN1a?

I was going to use some pipe and bearings, but its just stupidly hard to find a pipe size that fits a bearing with a sensible centre hole size so your not using a 30mm bolt!

could you not use solid bar for the rollers

and drill / bore bar out the hole to just over 30mm

so the 30mm bolt will pass throu

then bore the end out for the diameter of the bearing.

You don't mention the size of bar you intend to roll but I think I would be using closer to 50mm for the rollers, 30mm seems a bit light.

I always intended to make one myself but never got round to it, my plan was to find a lathe guy and get the rollers done properly to fit mounted bearing holders each end.

I don't have a lathe so no boring possible, it's on the cheap so I don't want to pay to have it bored, plan was to use some 10mm plate I have for the side plates, drill with the mag for 30mm rollers so say 32 mm for clearance and then pillow block each end, other option was one side place say 15mm thick, with a pillow block either side and the roller stuck out one side so its easy to get the workpiece out.

I'd only be rolling max12mm round/square and maybe 40*5 flat, 20*3 on its end.

for that size capacity,i think 30mm in en8 would be ample.i made mine over 20 yrs ago set in the ground in a detachable socket used 70mm round @ about4" cts & can roll 150x10 flat,30mm box,i put grooves in for rolling angle & flat on edge,yet always regret not making a keyed driving shaft where u can slip sleeves on to create different gaps for this.

what did you use as a bearing for 70mm?

just bored some steel sleeves, with oiling holes.

I suppose seen as there's very little rotational wear when you think about it a bearing probably isn't needed as long as its kept lubricated, christ a lot of cams are just held in a steel journal with no wearing metal.

Might just go for some thick side plates and mag drill some holes for the rollers, use some bigger ones and just make the top one adjustable, was going to drive both bottom rollers to stop slipping a bit more.

another consideration is an easy way to'slip' a roller out wwhen your doing endless rings,on mine i have to remove the whole side plate -works but not the quickest method.

Yeah planning on making the rollers easily removable. Just drawing up some designs now... on paper... the old fashioned way cos I'm too cheap to buy software!
