Rotor rewinds

following on from my troubles with my weldanpower 250:

If anyone needs a high speed rotor rewound, my rewind shop in Poole can now do weldanpower 250, ranger 300-Dlx and I expect ranger 305d rotors. If arcgen use a similar 2 pole rotor design, they will be able to do those too.

After a few teething problems, I can confirm the rotor is holding together nicely at the rated 3650 rpm.

Locally we used to have 3 motor re wind places, we are down to 1 now, and the guy must be in his 60's. I have wondered about volunteering to give them a day a week for free to try and learn more on the subject.

Got several here in Southampton, Knowlton and Newman, Sulzer (Dowding & Mills) Royle Jackson (my favourites) ABB, Eriks and probably a few others I don't know of. Mainly these guys are doing work for the ships or water treatment plant pump motors.

I wouldnt , its a carp trade,you will find out being service industry to petro chemical and shipping virtually every other job is a rush job,which means you end up working ghosters(24hours non stop with two half hour lunch breaks) week ends,loads of days end up at 2 am next morning,start again at 8, because basically a plant/line/ship will lose tens of thousands if out of action,but thats not reflected in the pay or how you are treated! I used to love the actual job in itself, rewinding 3.3k motors and see them run up afterwards is something else, bit nerve racking when standing there testing to earth with 5500volts in the two probes you are holding for a full minute for each phase though, the crackling gets quite loud.
doesnt alter the fact its a service industry expecting 24hr 365day service......if you want a life .......

if you are ever stuck for getting a motor re-wound then head to Liverpool, loads of people in the motor rewind trade.. they keep me quite busy aligning, balancing and doing V/A.

Ericks certainly rewind, some of the smaller companys do sub out work that is above there workshop/staff capabilities, nothing new there many industries do that.never heard of ABB, there is also c&c rewinds in Southampton.

ABB are quite big - link - I used to work for the industrial robot division

Couldn't tell you, I've had no real dealings with either of them, I just know I've seen it in their lists if services.

I supplied a load of hire kit to ABB when they built the RR car factory in Chichester. 18 months hire of eight 200 amp Newarc RT2000 tig sets, a shed load of 110v leads and a bunch of expensive Jankus 4" 6" and 8" pipe clamps (most of which never came back).
Someone dropped a testicle and installed metal pipe containing silicone to feed the paint line and it all had to be ripped out, scrapped and started again so the hire lasted twice as long as it should.
That was back when hire was good, each set was in for £175 per week with the accessories, I'll let you chaps do the maths.

Hugh, glad to hear the Lincoln is finally working. Fingers crossed for you that it remains so, you've had some pretty bad luck I'd say.
