Rotary Wire Brushes

Can anyone point me in the direction of decent quality rotary wire brushes?

I used to use mine in my cordless drill & they lost some bristles but nothing too bad but the side loading is bad for the bearings in the drill. I invested in an air die grinder and the wire brushes work a lot better in it but are losing bristles fast. I try to keep the speed down as the brushes are only rated for 4500 rpm but it's not easy as the trigger is very sensitive.

So I need some brushes with a higher speed rating but most of what I see are only rated for 4500 rpm.

Have you tried the ones specifically made for grinders?

I get my wire brushes from these people - looks like you would need to buy a brush for an angle grinder and then make an arbor to adapt it for the die grinder though?

Those ones for the angle grinders are lethal ! Everytime I use them my overalls are like a hedgehog with all the bristles sticking out so make sure you wear a face mask or goggles at the very least !

Absolutely essential - any brush is going to fatigue eventually and wires will break off. I noticed a tiny splinter just proud of the skin on my leg one night and when I pulled it out it was one of those wires embedded in the flesh.

I'm sure a pole attached to a circular base and loads of speaker magnets glued to the base will do a better and quicker job.

there's no getting away from wire rotary needles flying off the best rotary wire brushes and its a case of wearing the goggles and knee pads.

I've stopped using wire brushes now because of the mess they make. Also they burnish the metal which makes it poor for painting over. Polycarbide wheels are a lot better.

It amazes me just how painful those little wires are, ones stuck in your head are particularly nasty (they sort of work their way through the hat you are wearing). I tend to sweep up straight away after using them.

or you could just buy or make one of these

As brutal as these things are, they are an essential piece of kit for prepping for multi-runs and cleaning post weld.

I but Osborn pro ones from Buck & Hickman.
