Roller taper bearing taper ?

Hi again all. me at it again with these trailer hubs.

As I took for granted that Daxara trailer axles are as I researched are 1 inch they are not and are two different sizes.

I measured the axle and rear of the axle is 24.95mm and front is 19.95mm ( OD ) as the axle tapers down for some reason.

And both the bearings I have are 25.4mm ID and 45mm OD so no good



Now I have found that 30204 20x47x15.25 and 32005 25x47x15mm will fit but are 2 thou bigger on OD.

Should be fine ?

Now after that i am wondering are the tapers on bearings the same. reason i need to know is that i will only be using the bearings and cage to set in the hubs.

Are the stub axles not intended for two bearings as in most front car hubs? One a larger bore than the other , I don't think that I have seen a hub bearing that was tapered, Usually bearings with a tapered bore are used with a tapered split sleeve for locking it in place.

it has two tapered roller bearings front and back.

The outer case of the bearings are already fitted in the hubs. I just measured the hubs and they are 50.08mm OD

so i need to find bearings with a biiger OD to fit.


Is it only me this as i just cant think straight nowadays

You are making a false saving not removing the outer race, and from the sound of it, the inner, and not fitting complete new bearings. If the cone assembly is worn enough to need replacing, the inner and outer cups are too. if they aren't, clean, regrease and reassemble.

Remove the inner races from the axle and outers from the hub. One on or other of them will be a number - that will identify the bearing and allow you to find the correct replacement.

Bearings are made to standards -ISO for metric, ANSI for imperial. Even if you cannot read the numbers, measuring the ID of the inner race, the OD of the outer, and the width of the assembly, you will be able to find a replacement.

Go to SKF or FAG website - both have excellent search facilities and information - searching via number or dimensions will find what you want. Failing that, dropping a complete example of each bearing on the counter of your local bearing place and asking for a replacement will get you what you want. I dropped a Japanese bearing from a German power-take off box from an Italian 4WD saloon onto the the local counter of Spen Bearings, and the nice lady knew the bearing immediately, knew she'd sold the last four to someone yesterday, and knew she'd have me a replacement by tomorrow . . ;-)
