Depends on the motor I suppose.
If it's for competition you are going to have to go with regs in the RAC blue book.
I remember the ARC used to specify 6mm plate for Land Rover cages which I always thought laughable as completely overkill.
I would go with a thickness equal to that of the wall of tube, usually 2.5 -3.2mm for most common cage tubes.

For all MSA events where rops are compulsory:
Each leg, ie main hoop, front hoop and backstays, must have a mounting foot of 3mm minimum thickness. The area of the bodyshell where the cage is connected/attached must also have a reinforcing plate of 3mm minimum thickness and 120 sq.cm and is welded to the bodyshell. There is NO exception to this.
Many think that the transverse suspension beam as found on Peugeot 205, for example, is acceptable as a reinforcing plate. It is not. See blue book, page176,diags 13-18

my personal opinion is build as per the ~"blue book" (not seen one my self as i don't do this kind of thing) as you will only test your design upside down into a wall

When you come to sell the vehicle it's a bonus if it's to regs and can be used for competition. You may even decide to start competing yourself after a while, when the fun of just playing runs out. Be a right heartache to have to change something that's welded in then.
its for my saab engined rwd ka project so not sure what i could enter it into other than track days

You could use the car on MSA sanctioned events, such as road rallies! If car is registered and mot'd, this is possible, but not stage rallies ( may be acceptable in Irish Tarmac rallies). Autotest, in the specials class. Sprint/hillclimbs, in Sports Libre, which is a highly competitive "anything goes" class. There's certain to be a class in Racing and deffo Rallycross.
So, a small choice is available. Trackdays are still best value on a £/minute basis.
