Roll cab tool storage organisation & Gridfinity

I'm new to 3D printing and also just upgraded my roll cab to a larger 40 inch one. So the timing is pretty darn good for me to combine both new purchases into sorting out my tool drawers!!

This thread can be for ideas and sharing. Stl files / links for where to print your own tool holders. Share photos and ideas! Especially before and after.

Ive finally got my random spanner sets all into an organised and COMPACT fashion. Whilst I have tonns more room now in my roll cab it can also hold alot of weight so I want to maximise the storage and never waste any space with blow moulded cases etc.

I also printed a nice compact plier holder. This is meant for the Gridfinity system (more on that later) but cab be used standalone. Nice maximum use of space. If these pliers were laid out they would take up 3 times the space. Instead they fit very well in a corner of a deeper drawer, again maximising the storage space

Spanner drawer almost completed. All 3D printed organisers - sizes also embossed on the holders





Lots of bulky rolls and blow moulded cases ready for the bin. Now I can see the spanners easily, some I forgot I even had! Lots of weight but this cab is rated for that so no issues.

I have more dividers for the gridfinity system printing. I intend to make some custom holders like this you tube video, well worth a watch.

I always thought it was a very clever move by snap on to supply lots of space eating moulded trays so you take up all your storage space quickly, then need to buy a bigger box.

Nice job, I especially like the plier tray.

When I had my 1st 3d printer I modelled this to store my spanners (have shared on here before, stl is on Thingiverse somewhere



Why? I just couldn't find a spanner comb/rack that suited my needs so homebrewed a solution

Went a low tech for my socket exstensions and adapters, 3mm ply backing and some square wood strips glued onto it (yes there is one missing, thanks to my brother)



For sockets, I had the usual cheaper socket tray and then this turned up on FB Marketplace. Its from MAC tools and you twist the sockets to lock them on the tray, absolutely love it

Well, I certainly would find this useful. I have a 40 inch Snapon stack which is a bit messy, but I don't have a 3D printer.

What I do wonder, about socket storage, could a 3D printer "print" over some small magnets? reason I ask is my Snapon socket trays, which are cheap plastic rubbish and not size marked, well they do hold the sockets in their holes and they also magnetically stick to the drawer bottom. That'd be nice. I know Amazon do packs of small magnets which might suit.

And now I need to buy a 3D printer. Thanks lads

Yes indeed. You can do it 2x ways. Either print leaving a recess for the magnet and glue it in after or I've seen but not tried people setting it up so they can print the recess then pause print, fit magnets and it can print them inside.

You know you need a 3d printer so go forth and order one up The other 3d printer for newbie thread on here may be useful in that regard

I use those, no chance of socket dropping off, sizes marked on the top

I guess they could tip over when you open the draw etc... mince are packed in tight so never really had to combat that

Socket drawer is straight forward enough. I want to use a smaller, shallow drawer for them laid on their side



I dont have alot of sockets as I have several dedicated socket sets in carry cases that I use most of the time. So I don't see any need to arrange the sockets in a particular way. (Some people have huge socket collections and it makes sense to place them vertically, for me no worth it)

I was looking at the plier racks a while ago but need them angled at 20⁰-30⁰ to make best use of the drawer.
Love the way you've snugged the spanners up together, I bought sets of sharks teeth but found the spacing way bigger than necessary.

Thanks, yes I looked at the shark fin ones too. The nice thing about 4d printing your own is you can tweak it as you meed to.

I need to sort some plastic blow mould cases which hold things like bolt extractors and long hex bits etc. I'd like rails for these to cut down space and make it easy to see what all is there. I'd like to 3d print the rails too.

I see this type looks interesting, any others members suggest please?

Scale the rail to the length you require and print as many inserts as you require.

I printed the above socket holder and very promising:



I used PETG filament. No cracking or breakage when taking sockets on and off a few times.

But its very thin for saving filament -



So I will adjust it to a thicker base to give it more support when laying on its side. Ill use black and burnt titanium colour for the parts of it.
