Rod identification help please

Every now and then my uncle comes back with a few nice rods from the rigs, there`s one I rather like and I sheepishly admit I use it as a general purpose rod for anything that needs to be good. It`s also perfect on cast iron too.

Lovely shiney weld (i`m thinking probably due to nickel) Very glassy fast freeze slag which releases a little too easily (like it pings off everywhere without being touched)

Has anyone used/got/know where to get more, i`ve only got half a dozen left now, not that i use them often.

I think it reads, AROSTA 309Mo/309Mo-18/2210......

Can`t read the rest, there a bit old, and that pic is not very good, really should have written it down, there not here so i can`t even go and look. Any ideas folks?

Google shows it as made by Lincoln Electric Europe.

It is a 309 grade stainless-steel rod.

Ahh, good ol google, how did i forget about that. I`m guessing i`m going to scare myself when i find prices, and that i`ve probably been effectivly wasting a very good rod. Does explain it`s usefulness with stainless though. Half of the rods i end up with i have no idea what there for, but i don`t do much MMA. There`s another with a very pink flux, wish i knew what they were too, lovely rod, but there long gone. Thanks Shenion

Probably Vodex. A very good 6013. Another one to google.

It also explains how it works well on cast iron.

They are supposed to be good on dissimilar metals. I herar the SS rods are real nice to work with.

Thats what i meant Shenion, i should have said cast not stainless, i know what my brain was thinking though. If i get hold of any more i`d post some out to you, god only knows how that`d work to the states though.

Thanks for the offer for rods. Cost $10-$20 to send to the UK here. Hardly worth it for a couple of rods. I already have about 8 boxes of rods that will last me years

I picked up some cast iron rods. No specs on the nickel content but they worked real well. Fixed my vice with them.

For SS i'll just use MIG anyway

Why migging SS? tigging is much better

The outcome of welding SS that was made by Tig is far better then by Mig. it is more accurate, cleaner weld and you can control it much better then by Mig. at least according to my humble opinion that relies on experience of quite some time. the only reason to mig it is if you have a one time small task to carry out and you dont have a tig.

I do very little SS. I picked up a roll of MIG wire cheap ($9US). Usually takes longer to setup wire/gas than actually do the job

Yes TIG would be better, bit not worth the cost of rods considering how little I do. Also, my TIG is in no way portable so limited to bench work only. The MIG has long leads (40') and have just as long arc leads.
