Roaming charges rant

Thought it wouldn’t be long after Brexit before some avaricious mobile phone company reintroduced roaming charges.
My knowledge of economics is limited to balancing the household expenses but I am at a loss to understand how when told by a government you can provide a service for free but as soon as that pressure is removed it suddenly becomes chargeable.

Difficult to see how that works, many non EU countries were included in the Europe roaming zone for my network provider, not that I am going to be roaming any time soon.

What's particularly interesting is that it applies to new / renewing subscribers - they won't (can't!) retrospectively apply it to people still in contract.
I mention that as a large part of my reasoning to renew with Vodafone was their guarantee of free roaming in 40 odd countries (for the 2 year duration of my contract).

So it could go one of two ways - firms might follow EE by charging for roaming, or they might see that EE jumped too hard, too soon, and mop up EE's customers by not making the same announcements.

If that’s the case I’ll be leaving EE and shopping around for someone else as I travel to Southern Ireland And Malta twice a year.

Because they are a business that wants to make money. They'll charge what they think the market will stand. Maybe they've got it wrong this time, I mean all those disgruntled customers will leave won't they. Won't they? No, the vast bulk won't change and will just whine about it. Cf banks, utility companies and many many more.

Not doing bad if phone charges are the biggest issue.......what would you rather have....cheap phone calls or vaccinated?
