Hi, I recently had a very frustrating experience trying to set 6.4 x 16 monel rivets with lazy tongs. I managed 2/5. Having learned that not all riveters are equal I am eager not to repeat the experience and I'm looking to buy a more muscular tool before I go back for round two. The info given online never mentions monel rivets, I suppose they are more rarely used. I have seen some riveters which specifically say they will set stainless. Is this a good guide as to whether they will cope with monel? Finally the cost of hand tools that look like they might cope is not that much less than the cheaper end of the air tools. Is it worth paying a bit more to get an air tool? It's not going to get a lot of use, I'd just like to buy a tool that's painless to use and not going to need replacing again.

A tool that will set stainless ones will set monel ones the same size just fine.
But, a 6.4mm in either monel or stainless is hard work!
4.8 in Stainless is hard enough with lazy tongs. I'd want powered to go any bigger!
Not sure what budget options you have, either look for a hand tool that will do 7.8 steel rivets and struggle with it or look for a used air tool either cheap enough to keep or to use and sell on again.
I can't see a new air tool for those being budget friendly

I had a browse for second hand but at the moment nothing capable and budget friendly in the usual places. I'm leaning towards a draper which says it will set 1/4 inch stainless. They are discounted to £77 at the moment which although it's more than I'd like to pay, it doesn't seem outrageous if it can set 6.4 stainless. But I've got a week before I have to bite the bullet so I'll keep an eye out until then.

Never like the lazy tong style ones, a decent heavy duty lever one is better IMO. Or a cheap air one.

Did some coach work on a lorry body many years ago with 6.4 stainless blind rivets, and needed to add some rivnuts into the glastonite.
