Ride on Lawn Mower

ive got a ride on lawn mower, Honda 2218 model, it's a bit old and came with the house with around 500 hrs on it.

It's beging to get like BB's Meganne at the moment with things continually going wrong, last year the starter motor went, Honda wanted nearly £400, so after much looking I found an out board specialist local to me that sold the same starter for £55, result. Then the cutter deck went, that was simple enough, take it off, repair the holes, media blast then rust protection, paint etc etc. then punctures so a bit of tyre weld to the rescue, then on the weekend the sodding drive belt went, Honda wanted £65 plus vat for the belt. Luckily the friendly chap in the local bearing supplier matched it up to his stock and found the exact same size and profile for ........... £7 RESULT !

It just goes to show that it pays dividends to shop around and think outside the box

And, if anything else goes wrong with it in the next little while it might be getting torched along with BB's Meganne !

people just dont look after mowers nowadays
you should steam it off clean it all oil all metal parts
service replace the belts etc at the end of the mowing season but no one does just bung in the shed bring it out next year and expect it to work hard same with tyres need to be on blocks weight of the tyres
used to be called preventive maintenance

that's what you should do at the end of the mowing season wet mulched up grass and metal don't mix well

just like laying a car up for winter only on a smaller scale

sorry with belts i meant replace at end of season and leave loose nothing more frustrating than having a belt go and finding out your replacement is the wrong size

That's nothing compared to the megane...I went bike shopping today and on the way to the shop it failed to start, cut out whilst driving then failed to start again...then on the way home from thee shop the main beam came on for no reason and would t turn off, and my leccie Windows won't work...

Stupid thing

Mowers do go wrong as you said it's not in it's prime of life but better the devil you know kind of thing
my last mower came out of a skip all it needed was a plug change fresh petrol and two inner tubes
lasted 4 years not bad for nowt
but as said power wash or scrape then deck then paint with old engine oil will stop the rot leave belts loose, weight off tyres change oil before parking up for winter run out of petrol drain tank modern fuel is carp

If you are looking for a replacement I would suggest a castel garden mower. They are built in Italy, good quality & parts are cheap. They actually build a lot of the mowers for other 'manufacturers' such as Mountfield, John Deere and Massey Ferguson.

If you can I would look for any cutting deck larger than 36" as they tend to be a lot cheaper used.

Anyone want to guess why?

garden size most over 36in cut are commercial mowers

Think ours is 42", only takes a couple of minutes to drop the deck off if it needs to go through a narrow gap.
