Reversing lights

Have any of you chaps got any idea about the regulations concerning reversing lights?

I could do with some decent ones on my van (ie ones that actually lit the road behind). I was thinking of replacing my existing lights with a relay and a couple of small spotlights.

Any reason why I shouldn't do this? They will still only come on when reverse is selected.

As long as they only come on when reversing no issues Ive got two on my van wired into the existing £7 from halford but there only 20W each but big difference. If there on a separate switch i think you have to have an indicator in the cab.

They're limited to 21w each, if they're not automatic you have to have a warning light in the cab. They mustn't dazzle other road users. Google "Construction and Use" to find out about placement of the lamps.

When I used to do rallies in my Mini I had a 55W spotlight on the back, you need something decent when you're in the middle of a forest or country lane in the middle of the night!

Hello all,

I too have a 55W fog rather than spotlight on my two cars. I know that it is not strictly legal but have never had any problems. I wired mine into the existing reversing light circuit with a flick switch so i can chose whether to use it or not, depending on circumstance.

I'd say just fit some worklights so you can use them when not in reverse and can switch them on and off as you please

I had a play with IC's, built a simple circuit that needed sidelights and reversing lights to be on to switch the spotlamp on as it was only needed in the dark
