Reverse Cycle Air Con

Anyone have a split system reverse cycle air con to heat their workshop. I'm back thinking this might be my best option.

we have a potable one in out office, but only use it to cool.

its not terribly efficient either. what size is the space?

I use a propane space heater in mine, but that gets expensive.

what about a gas bottle wood burner?

They've started calling them that but it's just a air conditioner working in reverse so blows hot air in rather than out. Very efficient and drys the air as well.

Hi, I did look at this some years ago, with the coil in the ground or water course the initial installation costs were high and the running costs not far behind. the cabinet with the pump and and control gear was a fair physical size and required about 3kw to run and more, if using blown air, for the fan. Air to air like the A/C in reverse has no real benefit when the outside temperature drops too far below freezing, just when you want the most heat.

^^ As long as all the bits that get hot are inside the heat isn't wasted.

I was thinking of a system combined with a solar panel, water would be heated up by sunlight during the day and the heat extracted at night by freezing the water with a heat pump. That way the latent of heat of fusion is recovered as well as the (mass x temperature) heat.

We have friend with gshp. It's ideal for underfloor heating

We use to have them when working in Oz in winter and very popular there. I think they can work down to -15c. It's refrigerated air conditioning I'm talking about.

SimonR on lr4x4 built a system using old range rover components, I believe. Change-over valves allowed it to heat or cool inside.

We have nordic air source pumps in our house, they are OK down to about -5 then they start to struggle and use about 2kw of electric for their trouble! They do keep it ambient but we have a wood burning stove to go in as well to back it up.
If you do get one make sure it is the right size for the volume of the area otherwise it will never work properly, there has been a spate of them round here specified too small and costing a fortune to run cos they are flat out trying to cope with the demand!

Isnt there somewhere near there with (real) palm trees on the beach?
Something to do with being protected by mountains/in gulf stream - so dry weather, and never gets down to freezing.

I live about a mile from the most northerly vinyard in the world (europe?)

I think that's on the Hebridean Islands somewhere. If you've not been they are a stunning part of the world, especially Lewis and Harris.

Agree, it's a pity Crovie doesn't have a pub - great location looking West on a fine Summer's evening.

My pal lives about 200 yards from this, Achmelvich beach in NW Sutherland. These are Google pics but I had several on my old phone which I can't resurrect now , but they looked the same......
